2016 Poshest baby names revealed. Secret Cinema for kids: local launch. Skiing with kids?

Last Updated on : 9th January 2017

Dear NappyValleyNetter,

I know I haven’t fully mentally embraced 2017 as I’m still dating my cheques 2016.

Luckily, with the advert of Chip & Pin, it’s only the odd payment to the Thai Garden that I’m rewriting, which tells you all you need to know about the progress of my New Year’s resolutions.

This, however, is going to have to change.

Last Friday evening, despite much yelling gentle calling up the stairs I couldn’t get hold of Mr NVN to find out if he wanted his usual Pad Thai.

My fruitless shouting was finally interrupted by the ringing of the landline.

It was my husband, still upstairs, using his mobile to “phone in his order” (his words).

So I think resolution-wise if we start with some low impact “walking into the same room to order our takeaways” and then progress to “striding purposely to the front door to receive the delivery” then we’ll be off to a great start.

Or at least a wonderful meal.

Here is what you’ve been discussing this week about on NappyValleyNet:

weekly1-copyTatler have released their annual round-up of the top posh baby names of 2016: Hum and Uxerious make the cut. Really? I mean REALLY??? (click here).

Two posts about local restaurant (yay, back to food!): Alchemy asks if anyone has tried Jan on Northcote Road (click here)  and Tinkerbell wonders if there is space for a new pop-up on Hildreth Street? (click here)

FI wants to know if anyone has kept a nanny whilst on maternity leave? Did her attitude change and was it weird both of you being in the house all day? (click here).

The location of CrossRail2 is still one of our hottest topics and I think I’ve know why. It has all the magic ingredients to feed conversation at any dinner party: house prices, public transport and Waitrose! And there is a rumour it might affect school catchment areas. OK, OK I made that last one up! (click here)

Hamish Johnson don’t just sell fantastic cheese – they’re also really nice people. They’ve found a children’s bike and want to return it to it’s rightful owner. Thanks HJ – that’s so GOUDA of you and I hope the old owner isn’t feeling too BLUE. When they get it back be sure to tell them to look after it more CAERPHILLY in future. Ok, Ok, I’ll stop now. I know all these puns must be GRATING on you by now (click here).

weekly1-copySticking with cheese, well places you might find cheese, Roundhouse Design have posted details of their winter kitchen sale. They have two local showrooms: Nightingale Lane and Richmond Road, thanks for posting RH and good luck with the sale!  (click here).

STOP PRESS: we had a few more lost and found posts come in over the weekend: Mr T has lost his wife’s pregnancy notes. Probably on Northcote Road. (click here). IBC hasmisplaced a card wallet, probably on St Johns Road. It contains her residency card(click here) and JM has found a bike by Clapham Common (click here). If you can help reunite any of these with their rightful owners we’d be so grateful.

MM would love to try a weekly flower delivery – can you recommend a blooming good one, she asks? (click here).

Chantal is off to Paris for six months and wonders if anyone can suggest areas to live and bi-lingual nurseries? Je suis tres jealous! (click here)

You’ve heard of Secret Cinema? Well “Cine Mini” is just like that but for kids. What a fab idea! Cini Mini is popping up near Clapham North and family favourite Babe will be their first film. They’ll be real farmyard animals, a farmers market, face-painting and subsidies from the EU for any theatre seats left fallow unsold (OK, OK I made one of those up too!) (click here).

Would your au-pair like to meet other au-pairs? Well you’ve come to the right place if so! (click here) Not only that, but Eddie Catz Earlsfield have nanny meet-ups starting this week too (click here).

weekly1-copyMM’s little one has her heart set on a roller disco. Do you know of a local hall which might make the perfect venue? (click here)

Jane Wake is calling all pregnant ladies! If you would like to hear more about pregnancy and exercise, pelvic floor issues, reducing pregnancy related pain and what to do now to ensure your tummy comes back then you should click here. Thanks for posting Jane!

KM has a skiing holiday question. They’re planning to go in April with their 20 month old and are thinking about Canada. They’ll need a good creche or nanny service, and plenty of toddler related activities for those non-ski days. Does anyone have any recommendations and/or advice on the above? (click here)

The deadline for applying for primary schools is fast approaching. This post from Wandsworth Council is essential reading if your little one is hoping to attend one of their schools (click here)

weekly1-copyFrom schools to sushi! Our great friends at The Skylark are hosting a delicious sushi evening complete with botanically inspired cocktails plus manicures, mini-massages and the chance to browse pre-loved designer clothes too. See you there girlfriend!

From sushi to smocks: Petal is unhappy that her little one’s nursery have introduced compulsory smocks. At such a young age she feels they should be more individual as they have years ahead of them wearing school uniforms. What might she do to protest, she asks? (click here)

BB wonders if you know of any local entrepreneur groups? Where might she meet Balham’s (Karen) Brady or Merton’s (Deborah) Meadham? (click here).

VH wonders if Happy Faces has closed? Sad faces all round if it has! (click here)

Looking for a new challenge? We have more than the Southern Rail has strikes

Gentleman and a Van are looking for an office manager. We love G&V and I bet they’d be lovely to work for (click here). Monkey Music are hoping to hire a music teacher (click here), all together now, “ooh aah the funky gibbon”. The Chinese School in Balham is recruiting part-time Chinese teachers – native Mandarin speakers preferred, ideally with music, and drama skills (click here). Lastly we have a stack of nanny and au-pair vacancies right here.

Sticking with nanny and au pairs – the lovely people at The Language Web still have a few spaces on their English for au-pairs course. Classes are in Balham and Tooting Bec so it’s local too! (click here).

We have more “House and Garden” questions than Midsomer has murders!

Round House Design have published their “Top Tips for Buying a Bespoke Kitchen” – thank you! WC is looking for someone to build a custom wine fridge (click here). Are you about to embark on a building project? Do you have many questions? Our friends at Run Projects are hosting an event at the Bolingbroke Pub on the 18th of January to help quosh your queries! (click here)
