I think it is rare for insurance to cover (unless your work gives ygives you a swanky is-style package) but worth checking! Mine is covered as I have to have a csection due to previous csections. I was amazed when they told me I would be covered if I had another child when I called up a few years ago to add my last child to the policy! It would have never crossed my mind!

Excesses and consultant fees still add up even with insurance and late switch over though- I'm not expecting much change from about £6k.

That said, it seems to be the delivery fees for the hospital that are the biggest chunk at about £10k all in for a csection. Very nice to be covered for that as wouldn't have been an option orherwise

Hi

Yes- another one here who has switched later on. Luckily my insurance is paying the hospital fees for "delivery only" so I switched to Keith Duncan from
About 32 weeks on his delivery only package. Baby not due for a bit but so far very happy- he scans you himself at every appointment which is reassuring.

I only rang up to enquire at about 25 weeks so I was amazed to be able to get Mr Duncan as he is so popular but there was no problem (possibly not a popular time of year for babies compared to Sept/Oct?). Do your research on which consultant you would like as their specialities and costs do vary quite a lot.

It has been very easy to combine the NHS provision with late term private care.

Xx

It's no problem at all, provided you can find someone with availability. I've done it twice - swtiching at around 36/37 weeks. if you look at their websites, you'll see most consultants offer a 'delivery only' or reduced weeks package.

Hi

I am slightly changing the topic, I hope you forgive me :)

but I was wondering if anyone has switched mid-pregnancy or even in the final weeks from the NHS to Private (perhaps for non medical reasons) ?

is it possible to do ?

thanks everyone.

After a traumatic first delivery I wasn’t taking anything to chance and booked in (after recommendations from a few friends) with Nick Wales. He was fab and didn’t entertain any of my (ridiculous) negative thoughts about what could go wrong having my second. It was a positive experience from start to finish. He is extremely personable, competent and the work he does for the NHS is incredible – this was an important factor for me as I did feel a bit disloyal going private! All in, including a c-section and a nights stay in hospital It cost us just over £21k. This sounds a lot and it is but it was the best investment we have ever made.

Hi Steph

Keith Duncan specialises in pregnancies with twins. I also would say whilst he's not the most talkative he is the best in the industry which counts.
If you decide to go with any of the others Keith would do all of your scans as he runs the woman's wellness centre and also The Kensington Wing.
He's always on time and available 24/7 (unlike a couple of others) all in all they are all very skilled so perhaps have a look at their CV's on the WWC website or C&W website.
Keith's 'package' also includes all scans and he does one a week the last couple of months which is fantastic.

Best of luck it's very exciting and definitely money very well spent x

Hi there,
I was happy with Roshni Patel at C&W. However I wasn't so impressed with the midwife team on the Kensington Wing. My first baby was delivered in Hong Kong so perhaps the private experience here is much different, but I felt there was very little consistency from the midwives and little communication- I had to keep going over the same issues to each midwife who came to the room. Very frustrating after a difficult birth.
Good luck with it all X

Nick Wales - nice and friendly, helpful
Keith Duncan - not very friendly at all but good at his job
I second Mina Savidou - she saved my life after huge complications post birth. She is LOVELY AND will be always indebted to her!

Hi, I booked with Shane Duffy and he was fantastic, he did my scans in early pregnancy and answered all the questions I had. I had a very difficult first pregnancy and birth and my birth this time could not have gone better.
From what I hear he is the very experienced and helps with all the difficult deliveries even from other consultants and I felt reassured whatever happened he will would after me well and he did! :P

I second either Nick Wales or Mark Johnson. I was under Nick Wales (via NHS) and he scheduled my inducement date (difficult pregnancy) and Mark Johnson (on-call doctor at the time) handled my emergency C-Section. I ended up staying in the Kensington Wing for one week to recover and luckily my insurance (AXA) covered all costs. Mr. Johnson (a.k.a his PA) faxed over the recommendation of a week stay in KW and AXA approved it. Both specialists were fantastic and I can honestly say that my recovery from the C-Section has been incredibly fast -which I lay at the feet of Mark Johnson for the way he monitored me ... my incision/scar is going away and no infection at all! His knowledge and bedside manner very reassuring. Nick Wales was funny and straight forward. He was away on holiday when I was induced, but would have felt perfectly comfortable with him delivering my baby had he been able to.

Hi - I've been under of Mark Johnson twice. He's fantastic and would highly recommend him. I had C-sections both times and the rough cost was £12-15k I recall (including Kensington Wing, Mark Johnson, anaesthetist, blood tests etc).
Feel free to message me if you have any questions.
I also saw Zoe Penn when Mark was on holiday and she was great also.

sw11_ ,
are you sure this is right?
I've enquired about Mark Johnson not long ago (about 4 months ago i think) and it was approx 8k. I think the 20k figure is including hospital fees?
