agreed - I thought they were allowed to do up to 10 flights between 11pm and 6am, but that may be out of date...

Between the hours of 0100 and 0500 aircraft movements are restricted over London but so many an hour are still allowed to land and take off.
Certain aircraft which are noisey such as the old DC10, 727 and cargo aircraft are not allowed in London airspace during this time.
They do mange it as best as possible but you will still have some movements.

I know the a380s are meant to be less noisy but I can't really tell the difference with the b747s noise wise. Let's hope it's true though (it must be!) and the BA fleet gets replaced by new planes soon!
On the expansion the new runway will be further North, with planes approaching over King's road, won't be much impact on nappy valley. On the other hand if the airport were to move to the East I am not sure it would be that great for SW London in general.

If the Heathrow expansion goes through, it's going to be hell!!

Make sure you raise your complain. Even if it doesn't do anything, it's quite therapeutic :-)

The first plane has been between 4.20 and 4.30 most nights for the past 10 years. I hear them more often than not. I blame the children :D

No earlier recently, but you do hear them more loudly on a clear night and wind direction makes a difference.

I realise that it doesn't help but the early ones are actually the older 747's rather than the A380's so are much more noisy. I have a very good friend who is a Jumbo captain and the first flight in is a 747 from New York and if they have a tailwind then they obviously get here a bit ahead of schedule ie 04.45 rather than 05.00. The A380's (mainly from the far east) come in after the trans-atlantic flights and are generally a lot quieter.

It does feel louder at the moment but I have always noticed that the first plane is above us at 4.45 and last one at about 23.30...

I think in my delirium I forgot that it is 5 that they can land rather than 6. It was just quite a shock to wake up to and definitely louder than usual.

I've lived in Battersea for 9 years now and been aware of them landing from 4.30am during that time. I don't notice it now but I delightfully out of my insomniac or baby night feedings years that made me particularly and painfully aware of the time of night (morning!) that they were starting!

I thought they weren't allowed to do this for another hour - which is absurd enough!
There have been two in the last 3 minutes and can hear another on its way. They're louder than usual (if that's possible). It's clearly started up for the morning.
