Best thing I ever did: buy a simple cake (or perhaps for 15 2 cakes) from Waitrose or Sainsbury's, then decorate yourself with ideas from the web. We got away with a tub of fudge, cutting up cake 2, and icing part of it on to make it look like a fort, adding choc fingers for drawbridge etc. and plastic soldiers. Works brilliantly, and everyone loved the cake (and I am by no means and arts/crafts or baking sort of person.

I am another fan of Holly @ etoilebakery. If you give her your budget she will work with you and her cakes taste just amazing. I get some many comments every time we get a cake from her, she is local too

Can't recommend Holly enough! Her cakes are fabulous and she is just lovely to work with- very clear on price and very efficient. She made our wedding cake and it was fabulous but I know that she also makes ALOT of wonderful children's cakes. Her website is http://etoilebakery.co.uk/tag/holly-barea/ If you do get in touch please say that Jessica & Martin recommended you. Good luck!

If you are near to Northcote Road then Nightingale Patisserie is very good and reasonably priced. I think a 10" cake is between £25-30. They also do a gorgeous cream based filling/coating if you ask for it (has to be kept in the fridge).
I've been using them for family occasion cakes for many years now and people are always impressed with the actual taste of the cake. They are also happy to do egg free, gluten free and just about any other type of free you care to mention.
They are up the end opposite the library, along by cath kidston, farrow & ball etc.

Hi there,
What sort of thing were you after? I am just starting to sell home made cakes from home and could do an 8 inch layered chocolate cake, for example, for less than most store bought options. I'm happy to modify these to suit whatever you need. Feel free to PM me with any questions. No obligation:)

Def M & S or Waitrose for their cakes to order, I had an excellent Pirate cake from M & S last year, it looked & tasted fab. So much better than the one I ordered the year before from a cake shop in Southfields (Suzelle Cakes) which was awful, mis spelt name, lurid green icing, wrong Thomas the Tank Engine character & didn't taste at all nice & it cost me 3 figures!!

Inexpensive birthday cake?

by Argon » Mon Feb 09, 2015 10:52 am

I'm looking for a simple cake for my daughter's 6th birthday for about 15 children -- no need for it to be fancy or elaborate and prefer not to spend £40+. Does anyone have recommendations for shops to buy from or affordable bakers?
Thanks!
