Midwife led care at The Kensington Wing @ C&W does not cost anything near 20k.
I've recently had our son there although under consultant care, happy to chat to you on private message or email about it all if it would help you.
The care was outstanding so I could not recommend it enough.

Depends on how long you think you will need to be in hospital. For my second I was in the birthing pool room which is completely private. I had my little girl at midnight, they let me stay in this room on the bed with my husband until the morning. At 8am baby and I were checked and we were back home by 11am.

It would be nice to have a back up of a private room for after the birth, just in case you need it.

Hello, I was under midwife care at the Kensington Wing when I had my daughter about 18 months ago. I really liked seeing the same two midwives throughout and they were really kind. I did end up having to have a c-section but I found out about 3 weeks before my due date, because the midwife flagged up a problem.

I really liked seeing the midwives more often than you would on the NHS and certainly it was great being able to be a bit more flexible with the appointments. I had originally thought I would have a natural (but with drugs!) birth and the thought of being able to go in to hospital and have pain relief when you wanted it was very appealing.

The after care at the Kensington Wing was excellent and having your own room (pull out bed for daddy too) and nurses available to help with pain relief/worries/getting feeding right was great. It definitely isn't a hotel (which I think some people seem to expect?!) but it did make the first couple of days with a new baby not too stressful. The midwives were also helpful at chasing up test results etc which my daughter had had to have after she was born.

However, I wouldn't be fooled by the prices on the website! Even taking off the additonal price of having to have a c-section it was more than double what it says there and you have to pay for all scans etc during your pregnancy...not even the lucozade for the lucozade test is free!

I'd be interested to hear more about how it works getting a room at the K wing after an NHS birth if people managed to do that. Just having a little quiet to get some rest and bond as a little family is invaluable.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply. I've done it twice on the NHS a at Chelsea and Westminster. Both times I was in for 4 nights after the birth and tried to get a private room for those nights - either on the NHS ward or the private ward - but none were available. And both times tried to get an epidural but the queue for the anaesthetist was too long so I didn't get one. So it's fair to say I'm ready to try something else!

Has anyone gone for this? Seems to me to be an attractive middle ground between regular NHS care and Consultant led care which can cost £20k plus. I am unlikely to need a consultant given my prior history (used NHS in the past) but this time round I am after more convenient appointments, guaranteed private room, more control over pain relief etc so midwife led care at the Kensington wing sounds like a really good fit. Keen to hear others experience though. Thanks
