Hello, great question!
we have done it, we have solar PV panels and some solar thermal (for hot water) and it is very satisfying to see the meter ticking round and to get the payments in the bank account! And to know whenever you run the dishwasher or charge the phone on a sunny afternoon, it's basically free! 'About 9 years' is what we were told too, as regards how long the pay back time is, and on the past year's performance it probably will be about that, possibly very slightly more. It does keep generating on a cloudy day, just not quite as much as in full sunshine.
You can't even see the panels from the road really.
I think if you are planning to stay in the house for 10 years ish and can afford to do it, it is definitely worth it. and if you don't have the capital, but like the idea there are plenty of companies who will put the panels up at their cost, and pay themselves back out of the savings generated. But I have no experience of how it works, and whether the finances really make it a good deal or not.
Environmentally speaking, the more people who do it, the stronger the message to government, industry etc that people care and the more that the costs of the panels will come down and start to make the technology affordable for more people.
As per previous posts, we haven't needed to do any maintenance (We had an annual check to make sure all ok ,but so far so good) and we've also been told by agents that the panels should add to the value of the house.
It is still a big up front cost, tho, which is why I suspect more people haven't done it yet. You do have to pretty forward thinking to do it.
