We used to have "chicanes" instead of speedbumps along Earlsfield Road,Burntwood Lane and Magdalen Road.

They were excellent at slowing cars and (because they were tricky to navigate for larger vehicles) really slowed monster 4x4s and lorries.

As a bonus they didn't wreck your expensive suspension when you drove over them at legal speeds (although a few drivers suffered punctures when driving too fast).

However the Council has replaced them all with speedbumps - no doubt there is a good reason.

I think the question of enforcement should be handled separately: If we think it is a good idea, there are many ways to enforce it, and to make it self-enforcing. :?

Agree with BFW - totally meaningless unless enforced.

Same as litter dropping fines, same as dog messing fines.

They're just gestures to keep people happy but that don't achieve what they set out to

I would love to know how they are planning to enforce this !

Wandsworth Council has been busy replacing speed bumps over the last 12 months - the new speed bumps are TOTALLY ineffective if you are driving a 4x4 and unfortunately we all know how many Range Rovers do the school run in SW11 every day !

I have complained and was told that these new speed bumps are better for Rescue services - I am sure more rescue services will be needed now that the speed bumps are so low and 4x4s can merrily speed around the streets of SW11 !

The speed bumps in Lambeth are much more effective - you have to slow down otherwise you scrape your car.

I am all in favour of a 20mph speed limit - but I don't think it will be possible to enforce this !

Dear NappyValleyNet,
As you may know, there is a push to get a 20 mph speed limit on all council- controlled roads in Wandsworth.

This could be particularly positive for older pedestrians, cyclists, families with young children. Some Wandsworth roads are currently 20 mph. It is not always easy to enforce. However, if there is borough-wide support for 20 mph roads, more would have to be done to make sure it is adhered to.

Have your say on borough-wide 20mph limit. http://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/info/20043 ... peed_limit

Many thanks,
