You might be interested to know more detail on this - a number of other streets (Trinity Crescent, Gerrards, Veronica, Terrapin, Tooting Bec, Bedford Hill to name but a few) would be very negatively impacted by this proposal and it would ultimately lead to increased congestion and longer periods in the car for those trying to get across to Balham from Tooting and Furzedown with impacts on the environment see this map: http://sadiqkhan.nationbuilder.com/res ... g_traffic

The official consultation is here: http://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/DrJ if you have a view either way this is what the council will use and so it is VERY important to have your say here by 15th April.

If you are against the proposals sign here: http://you.38degrees.org.uk/p/ResidentsSayNO

If you want more detail there are threads here:https://https://www.streetlife.com/conv ... qjzwx6co// If this doesn't work for whatever reason type in Elmbourne into Streetlife - the no right hand turn thread has the most posts but there are some others with good detail.

I believe there is also a local meeting planned details are on streetlife.com

It's a six month trial - surely anyone who wants to improve the common would support this? If it really does turn out to be a bad idea, that will become pretty obvious.

But if it turns out to have minimal impact on surrounding roads, and massively improves a cherished public space, what's not to like?

Goldhawk: I would like to see Dr Johnson Avenue closed to traffic. However, I agree that the proposed restriction on right hand turn from Tooting Bec Road into Elmbourne Road is very problematic. To me, it would have been more sensible to limit traffic on Elmbourne Road by prohibiting turning right from Elmbourne Road into Tooting Bec Road. That turn is already problematic because of limited visibility of traffic coming from the Tooting Bec junction on account of how the Tooting Bec Road bends. Anyone who wants to get to Tooting Bec junction already has the option of going down Ritherdon Road or one of the other roads in Heaver.

Covering the railway would be brilliant

The Council also needs to look at covering parts of the railway line between Tooting Bec Road and Bedford Hill. Currently, the railway line cuts off 1/5 of Tooting Bec Common from the remaining part. There's not even a footbridge.

The railway line is set in quite a deep cutting (bridges cross it at both Tooting Bec Road and Bedford Hill) so covering it would not be a problem. As an example of an innovative way to do this is the Green Bridge that links the two parts of Mile End Park in Tower Hamlets across the 6 lane A11:

The Green Bridge cost £5.8m but covered a much greater span and rise than would be needed to cover the railway line in Tooting Bec Common.

The no right turn at Elmbourne seems ill advised given you can't turn right at the Tooting Bec intersection either

Councillors say that any proposal to permanently close Tooting’s Dr Johnson Avenue to vehicle traffic would have to undergo a six month trial period before a final decision could be reached.

The council is currently holding a statutory consultation on proposals to close the cut-through that runs across the middle of Tooting Common.

If the proposal is approved, Dr Johnson Avenue’s tarmac could be removed and be replaced with grass and trees.

But leading councillors have re-stated the critical message that a six month trial period would be needed before any change was made permanent.

This would allow highway engineers to gauge the impact of the closure on traffic conditions in the area.

The council’s environment and transport spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook said: “We thought the idea of removing traffic from the middle of the common was worth closer examination because of the potential benefits and because 58 per cent of people who took part in last summer’s informal consultation supported the change.

“It would create a larger open space that was no longer divided in two by tarmac and provide a much safer route for pedestrians, especially young families in the area, and cyclists too.

“Removing the traffic would also result in a quieter and more tranquil open space, as well as providing new wildlife habitats.

“But I am also fully aware that a change like this could easily have knock-on effects on the wider area and cause traffic problems further afield and that is what we want to avoid.

“What we are saying therefore is that if the public supports the change, we would proceed only on a trial basis for six months. This would give us enough time to assess the closure’s impact on traffic conditions in the area and if these were found to be unreasonable, we could revert back to where we are now.

“This is certainly not a done deal. It is up to local people to help determine the outcome of this consultation and why it is really important they take part and have their say.”

Dr Johnson Avenue runs for a third of a mile between Tooting Bec Road and Hillbury Road. It separates Tooting Graveney Common from Tooting Bec Common – effectively splitting what’s more widely known as Tooting Common into two separate open spaces.

In order to prevent drivers from using Elmbourne Road as an alternative route, the proposals include a ban on vehicles turning right from Tooting Bec Road, ensuring northbound traffic could not access it, while further measures could be put in place to deter southbound traffic from making the corresponding left turn.
