10.6.8 has Time Machine, all you have to do is plug-in and format a USB/Firewire disk. However, this is not foolproof, as it really only keeps a track of your current stuff - if you deleted something, and then two years later wanted to restore it, you might be out of luck.

If you are using iPhoto for your images you are able to export whole catalogues of images - I suggest DVD is a good medium for doing this. Just export a month/event at a time - or more if you can get it on a single DVD.

As to the upgrades - more recent ones are all free. I think you may have to pay for 10.7 - yes £14.99:

10.9 and after are free upgrades.

With any upgrade you will need to check whether your machines will support that OS. With 10.6.8 you can go straight to 10.9+ (latest is 10.11) if your machine supports it.

Unfortunately, already, the 10.6.8 wont allow us to update Safari as it's 'too old' - flipping Apple, and their ways of making you upgrade every few years. Quite frustrating.

You don't say what OS version you have, but I think from 10.5 they all have "Time Machine" which is Apple's built-in backup. Just attach a hard disk via USB/Firewire and the OS will ask whether you want to use that drive (after formatting) for Time Machine.

You can buy TB (ie 1,000GB) disks for under £100.

Alternatively backup the images manually to DVD.

We have a couple of iMacs at home with about a bazillion photos on each, so not surprisingly they are pretty full. We're looking to back up all photos from both Macs to an external hard-drive (recommendations gratefully received). Ideally, we'd like an expert/company to come in and assist with this - rather than me just pressing random buttons and deleting the photographic history of both children - plus a general 'service' (is there such a thing?) of both machines.

Does anyone know of a reputable person, or company locally to do this, or perhaps we should contact Apple direct. All advice very welcome.
