It seems to be a growing issue according to the BBC although the comment about the stately home owners dogs weeing on the carpet is quite gross!

We have been bothered by moths for years but living in a big house with 5 bedrooms over 3 floors it would be a mammoth job to spray everywhere. However, we have found out over a few years that diligent spraying (we bought sprays from Robert Dyas) that the problem has more or less gone away. Keep a spray handy, use moth balls in cupboards, plastic wrapping on precious woollen clothes and they can be conquered - or at least kept in check!

The female moth will prefer to lay her eggs in dark undisturbed places so lofts, spare rooms, under furniture or where a fitted carpet meets the skirting board. Getting rid of them is not easy. Here are some options
1. Use a professional pest expert to spray the affected room(s). Beaver pest control have been recommended and used by a number of my clients www.pestcontrolservices.co.uk and will offer a free respray if the moths are still visible within a month.
2. Freeze for at least 2 weeks any affected items and this will kill both the larvae and the eggs.
3. Use pheremone traps which will kill the males so preventing them mating with the female and the life cycle repeating. I sell these traps.
4. Use a pest spray on wool rugs and fitted carpets. I sell the spray.
5. Use deterrants - How effective these are is questionable but worth a try.

The reason I know about the clothes moth is that I sell Oriental rugs which being wool they really like.

How to get rid of moths?

We have been clearing out our loft and have found evidence of moths. Until recently, I never actually saw any, however, they had happily chewed their way through some winter jumpers. In the last few days have seen a few on walls and feel we need to call in the professionals before it gets out of hand.

Any recommendations gratefully received.

Many thanks
