Flooring Advice

Looking to replace the flooring in our living room and hall way (usual between the commons layout). We have varnished original floorboards from when we moved in but they look tired with lots of gaps etc and we'd like to lay a nice new wooden floor on the top. I have a couple of questions / concerns ..
- Are waxed / engineered wood floors destined to be ruined in a house with 2 small children or does a quality / well installed / well maintained product hold up OK?
- Similarly for the hall way specifically .. with traffic of buggies and scooters etc is wood a terrible idea and would we be better off investing in Victorian style tiling?
Very grateful for anyone's experiences and/or regrets around their flooring choices!
