Hi, we stayed in a suite at the Sofitel Midtown which was great. The sofa opened into a bed for the kids and the breakfast was really good. It's near a handy diner (The Red Flame) when we were tired after a long day and is about halfway so we could get up and downtown easily and walk to lots of places like Central Park, Empire State, Times Square. If I was going without kids I'd stay somewhere else but with kids it was perfect. If you join Accor (free) you get a discount.

The Trump on Columbus Circle is worth looking at if you can stomach staying there given who owns it. As a lot of people clearly can’t (!) they have really good deals so you could get a one bed suite (with sofa bed in the lounge) for way cheaper than at any similar hotels. The suites have a little galley kitchen so you can buy yummy food in the nearby Wholefoods and prepare it there. They’ve been newly refurbished and are very comfy and stylish. The location is just the best - right by Central Park and also by one of the big interchange subway stations so you can get downtown really quickly. And also by the Times Warner shopping mall. It has a pool and a gym and the staff are lovely and (and very diverse!) and you can walk to Fifth Avenue, Times Square, the Met all quite easily. If it’s out of your budget I still recommend looking in that area. It’s a great location.

The Elsyee is not bad especially in one of the superior rooms (deluxe or better) - https://www.elyseehotel.com/en/ though I've only ever stayed there when I wanted somewhere to sleep rather than on leisure.

But two words of caution - I'm not sure how it would be with a 9yo, though they are very obliging if you email queries.  And there isn't a restaurant.  The Monkey Bar is a good independent restaurant accessible from within the hotel, and breakfast is a real nothing to write home about buffet.

Avoid the Warwick.  It represents everything terrible about US hotels.

Can anyone please recommend a hotel in New York to stay in during October half term for a few days to help celebrate my wife's significant birthday?

We will be accompanied by our 9 yo so would need one large(ish) room; beyond that and being in Manhattan I would imagine, am pretty open to any suggestions.
