It's been a year, but I would like to add my opinion. Writing can be a real challenge, especially in the early years of school. One thing that can help is to try some fun and interactive activities that will make writing more enjoyable. Have you ever looked at worksheets for preschool? They can be a great way to practice writing in a relaxed and fun way.
Another tip is to keep it simple and focus on the basics. Start with short sentences and build up from there. And don't worry too much about spelling and grammar at this stage. The main thing is to put your ideas on paper.

Hi Handwritinf,

Sorry to hear that your concerned about your child's writing.  From your description, it seems that it's the process that's problematic for them at this point.

There are lots of fun ways to improve motor skills.  Playing with play dough, creating origami or using scissors to create an art project will all strengthen these skills.  For children your son's age, I've always found that turning the experience into a game or competition is helpful, e.g. how many paper clips can you thread in 1 minute or how many grains of rice can you pick up with tweezers.

If you have any further concerns, or would like any more suggestions feel free to reach out to me naomi@thebrainery.co.uk.

Best,
Naomi

My child also struggled with handwriting. (They too had sensory issues which were helped by an OT.) Amanda McCloud (hand writing specialist mentioned elsewhere in this thread) suggested hyper-mobility might be the cause. She was right. Don’t give up on handwriting entirely but consider introducing typing. My child’s written output increased by more than 30%. Whilst not overcoming the underlying issues completely, it did help counter their frustration and allow them to show school their potential. Best of luck.

Hi. We have been through this. Turned out there were also sensory issues. You are lucky school have flagged it as we just kept being told our son had “poor handwriting”. You may want an OT rather than a tutor.

Year 3 struggling with Writing

by Handwritinf » Thu Oct 19, 2023 9:50 pm

Hi all

Looking for advise please

My year 3 boy is really struggling with writing ( letter formation, capital letters , finger spaces, organisation of the space).

He is a really smart kid, lovely personality, loved by friends and teacher.

The school support him with extra tuition but with very little result.

They say to wait to assess him as it’s a summer boy. He started to read also bit late but now on a purple level so they are not worry.

Any suggestions ? Any tutor I can contact ? Or any idea you may have ?

Thank you
Rose
