It's simple to get around it, just ask for a fluent Tagalog speaker

The other option is to search in places that do not stop you from asking for what you want for reasons of political correctness - i.e. gumtree and some others. You can always refuse all other candidates under some pretext and carry on looking for the nanny from the country you like, but that would be a colossal waste of time which i sure none of the mothers of young children have too much of.

Whilst the agency won't be able to search purely for a "Filipino", because it is discriminatory, a large proportion of the candidates they have that will do nanny/housekeeper roles are Filipinos.

I think you can specify a particular nationality or linguistic ability if it is part of the job description - i.e. an au pair of a particular nationality to speak in that language to the children. Otherwise you are discriminating on the basis of race. You should not advertise the fact, you also shouldn't be using that as a criteria when you hire someone.

However when it comes to having someone in your house looking after your children, I personally think that it is less morally suspect to be discriminating in this way than if you were hiring employees for a company. Although I don't think this is recognised in law, but I would draw parallels with tenancy laws: I know that tenancy laws for lodgers are a bit more biased in favour of the 'landlord' than when renting a self-contained flat as the lodger is sharing the landlord's own home.

It might not be racist, but it is illegal. I recently tried to hire a nanny with a specific nationality request but was advised by an agency that it is illegal under employment laws (and was confirmed to me by an employment lawyer), so be careful.

I dont think that it's racist at all. I specified that I was looking for a Finnish au pair when I was looking for help and didnt think that I was being racist but maybe I am wrong?

I may be being really thick here, but isn't it racist to ask for a philippino nanny?

Personally, I don't take offence, but surely there are laws to stop people requesting a race/nationality in a job?

There is a specific filipino nanny agency, you should try and google it.

I have a filpino nanny/housekeeper through Kensington Nannies so you could try them too.

By the way it is nothing to do with cheap labour. They are the same rate as experienced British nannies, plus tax on top of course.

My experience is that they are more committed and give back as much as they get ie if you treat them well and fairly, they will dedicate themselves to your child and family's needs to their max potential, and yes this includes cooking, cleaning, laundry and whatever else you may require. It is up to the employer to set the job description/boundaries. This is very different to my experience of a non filipino nanny, who tends to be willing to look after the child's needs only and not the family's needs too. Of course this is a huge generalisation and there are wonderful and terrible nannies of all races, and there are disadvantages with filipinos which i wont go into here. But having had a filipino nanny, i now would not consider any other myself.

My understanding is that Philipina nannies are so popular as they perform all of the housekeeping duties as well as look after the child as standard. Essentially, they do exactly the same as a stay at home mum would do i.e. take care of children, do all cooking, cleaning, laundry etc.

They are also very good with children as they come from such a nuturing culture.

Also very popular with people who have lived and worked in the far east as it seems that a philipina nanny is a family must-have for all the ex-pats!!
