we have all our work wear embroidered (Done & Dusted) at a place called London Stitch in Earlsfield. Very helpful (and reasonable). They do embroidery for schools I recall and have samples of their work in the shop.

I remembered seeing the old post and rather than creating a new one, thought better to keep the conversation there; I knew that the "new posts" column on the right would bring it to people's intentions. So a kudos to your site's design really !

Re; the name stamp, brilliant, exactly the answer I wanted. I will go buy it then ! Many thanks

Gosh, this is an old thread :)

Monaco, a friend of mine was telling me about the stamp just a few days ago. She swears by it, and as a primary teacher, recommends it to all her parents, too.

The stamp does fade over time, but she just restamps over the top.

My kids were at Noah's ark Cobham close and I chain stitched (with help from google) for my eldest, but for my 2nd child I bought iron on letters from the Wimbledon sewing machine centre shop at the tooting end of balham high road and an iron on train picture too. I ironed them all on and then sewed around the edge too to stop them coming off in the wash. The 2nd child's smock looked so much more fun than the eldest's. The ironing letters I got had a blanket stitch effect printed around the outside which disguised my messy sewińg well. There was a good mix of methods on all the smocks and it is a v laid back nursery compared to some so no-one is going to judge you for your sewing or lack of it!

Has anyone tried these stamp on labels ? I just received an email to try them and wonder if it's worth it or if they make the clothes look dirty ?

I know you were asking about the outside name but for labelling their other things I just wanted to recommend these

http://www.attachatag.com/default.asp

I spent weeks sewing in name labels before my son started pre-school last year. We tried the iron on ones but they didn't stay in long enough if you wash clothes at a high temperatures -which you have to with messy toddlers!

Anwyay, my daughter starts this September and I just couldn't face doing it all again so gave these a go and they are fabulous! They literally take seconds to add and then stay in until you take them out. I was worried they might be uncomfortable for the kids but no complaints so far and my son is super sensitive/whingey about that sort of thing. They are brilliant!

Sorry I sound like an advert but they have saved me so much time- can't believe they aren't more widely known about!

From what I'm aware of it's supposed to go on the outside? what nursery are you going to? we're at noah's ark cobham close and i know it goes on the outside (plus all other items get names on inside)

My son is also starting nursery in September and requires a named smock - I was thinking of a name tape but should I be putting his name on the outside?

Lunalu, my mum is a legend at this type of thing. I will get her to cut out some letters for you and I will whip round and sew them on over the summer holidays for you. I knew the extensive sewing education I got from my girl's school would come in handy one of these days! xx

At my child's nursery nearly everyone has their name sewn on their smock by hand - chain stitch or a few have letters cut out of fabric and then sewn around. One person had the iron on letters but they seemed to peel off quite quickly as the smocks need washing alot.
Chain stitch is pretty simple - I ended up googling this exact thing last year and then did it myself. Or do you not have an obliging grandmother/auntie etc who could do it for you?

I'd check with the school - ours has someone you can pay to applique it on for you.
