Hi
Can I suggest the Early Learning Centre Flashcards. I've used them and think they are briliant. They come in a large size perfect for teaching your son his ABC's and also numbers to help him learn to count.

My son (similar age) does exactly the same thing with numbers! He has started trying to count things too and it usually makes me laugh when "elven teen" comes after 4. He is also perfectly capable of recognising his own name when he wants to - maybe your son just wasn't playing ball when his grandmother was there.

So, I wouldn't worry. I think it is normal. Perhaps you could ask the nursery teacher for reassurance as they will have seen a wide range of normal abilities at your son's age.

Hi everyone,

I would really appreciate some advice.

My mother in law looks after my son (3 and a half) on the weekdays whilst I am at work. He goes to nursery part time in the mornings, occasionally the parents/nannies stay at the nursery to help out. Today was my mother in laws turn to stay and help. When I collected my son from her house after work, she told me that before the children have circle time and snack time, they have to recognise and point to their own names on a board. She said that all the children did this with know problems at all, although my son was the only one who couldn't point to his name.

I understand all children develop at different stages but I can't help but think that it's my fault and its something I haven't done with him or something I am doing wrong.

I have tried many different things but he is not interested at all. He used to be able to count to 10 easily but now he gets to 6 and loses concentration and starts saying 11,14,3.

What should I do?? Should I be worried?? Does anyone have any good tips of how they got their children to learn their letters and numbers?
