Hi ladies,

We adopted a 12-month old baby boy when we were living in Wapping from Tower Hamlets.

His birth mum was living in the same borough but they did not think it was an issue.

We stayed there for three more years.

Adoption has been the most amazing experience for us. So, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Kind regards,

Emilie1

Yey!! We've just found out we've been accepted onto the formal assessment process for getting approved as an adopter! Three day course in September (!) followed by fortnightly meetings with social services (!!!) for about 6 months before we are likely to get approved to start looking for a small person to adopt

Erykah - they don't like placing children too close to where they used to live and / or have birth family and London boroughs ae generally too small to get far enough away, but large counties like Surrey are OK because eg someone in Guildford could adopt a child from Croydon and it's unlikely that they will run into family

why won't the local borough be able to help?
really hope all goes well for you and looking forward to hearing how you get on!

Just thought I'd post an update

We phoned round lots of agencies - some borough councils and some private agencies - and ended up at an information evening at Ealing Borough Council a few weeks ago on the grounds that they were actually starting new "recruitment" process. We then had an hour long phone interview with a social worker before we were approved for a home visit which happened today. So now we wait to see whether we are going to be accepted into the formal adoption preparation and application process - fingers crossed....

If you're thinking about it, try www.BAAF.org.uk for details of agencies, and remember in London your local borough council probably won't be able to help and you will need to look at a neighbouring (or further afield) council or a private agency.

I'll let you know how I get on

Adoption?

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this but...

Does anyone have any experience of adoption in this area? We've looked into it in the past, but have never really stayed in one place long enough to take it forward properly. Now we're putting down roots in SW19 we want to explore it further, but it's so confusing in London with all the different private agencies and borough teams with different rules (compared to the county teams we spoke to before). So really grateful to hear about anyone else's experiences or tips that they can pass on

Many thanks!
