Not wanting to put a dampner on this thread, but you may find that not all cake decorators will accept commissions like the original request. Ben 10 is a copyrighted character and it is illegal to make and sell a cake containing one. I appreciate this doesn't affect the customer (bar having to find a different cake decorator!), but I wanted to say this.

I will also say that I am aware of instances where brands/companies have sued cake decorators for breaking copyright law, so it's not a frivolous comment!

And for the lady with the misspelt name, it should have been corrected at the time and to a standard that was acceptable to you and I'm sorry this didn't happen.

We just used Holly @ Etoile for our child's birthday after our previous cake maker cancelled just a week before the party. She was lovely and amazingly happy to help. the cake turned out better than I imagined and was delicious. Also very reasonably priced and very professional, even providing a detailed cake order and invoice. I will now be using her for all our future cakes.

I agree that it is good to support local, independent businesses.

But wrongly spelling somebody's name on a personalised cake is a pretty bad mistake to make and would definitely put me off using them.

When I first recommended it, I hadn't used it, a friend had. Having posted about to to try & support local businesses, I felt it only fair to share my own experience esp since I'd spent 3 figures. I haven't reccommended anywhere without trying it first since.

I share your concern for starbucks & tesco's and support the independents whenever I can which is why I went to the cake shop in the first place & why I was anti the new Costa coffee in the Tonsleys

Sorry, I didn't mean to upset you. I just think small, local businesses in this area need all the support they can get and don't think (what is, fair enough, in my own opinion) a relatively minor error based on one experience should be used to sully a reputation. But as for how something tastes, I think its fair enough to have your own opinion. I'm just wondering why earlier on in the thread you were recommending the same place?

Its just my personal vendetta against places like Starbucks and Tesco's ruining our high street, nothing personal! I do understand the need to feel like everything is perfect for our little ones.

It wasn't just the spelling error although how difficult is it to correctly spell a name when it is writren right in front of you but the fact that I actually had to insist on the spelling being corrected. They rushed it & it looked awful so I asked them to do it again & they made a right fuss. And then after all that the cake didn't even taste nice plus having asked for a Thomas cake, my son pointed out that it was an edward cake as it had number 2 on it rather than number 1!!!

What a way to blow a simple mis-spelling out of proportion!

I live in Southfields and I've been to this shop many times during the week to meet up with other mums for coffee and cake and seen (and smelled) them baking at the back of the shop.

The staff are always lovely and the cakes always look amazing, its great to have such a wonderful little shop in the local community - I don't think all of this should be forgotten due to a spelling error!

I recently ordered a cake from cakes by Robin on Replingham Road & I was very disappointed.

It cost me 3 figures, they spelt my son's name wrong despite the instructions being with the cake as it was made. I'd actually spelt his names over the phone & via email.

I asked them to redo it & they just re-did the wrong letter but rushed it so it looked awful.

I complained & was offered a £10 discount for it being mis-spelt & looking dreadful or to wait & have the entire wording redone.

When I aksed why the cake hadn't been checked before I picked it off, thew assistant said that "they were busy" not too busy to take my order & my £££

I opted for the latter, the cake did not taste that great as it should have done for 3 figures & I wouldn't use them again.

The cakes aren't hand made but made en masse off site & shipped in.

Disappointing :(

As a result of the recommendations on here we just used Holly Barea to make a Peppa Pig birthday cake for our daughter. It was amazing! Not only beautiful to look at but gorgeous to eat and all the adults loved it as well as the kids! Send me a PM if you'd like to see a photo!

Just had Holly Barea make my son's R2D2 cake and cupcakes for school. Ditto the comments on not a crumb left and the cake itself was stunning. Holly is amazing
