I bought a turkey from a nappy valley butcher (I don't want to name names) and I have to say I was very disappointed.
We ordered a 6kg turkey around end of October for Xmas, for £70. We then received a letter from the butcher in November saying that due to an oversight they had undercharged us for the turkey and we owed them another £20. Having had previous good service for them, we gave them the benefit of the doubt and paid the additional £20.
When we went to collect it on 23rd December, it was absolute chaos in there. I had assumed the turkeys would all be boxed up with order names on ready for collection, but they just had a big pile of turkey's out back. When we were eventually served, they said they only had 8kg turkey's left which were another £30! The shop was too busy to effectively complain, and being 2 days before Xmas we don't have much choice. I've now stopped using this butchers as I was so disappointed over their whole management of the turkey distribution. I understand that they can't guarantee a certain size, but they made it sound as if they were all being given out on a first come first served basis, instead of as ordered.
The point of my moan above was to make sure you know exactly what you're ordering and what will be distributed and collected.
This year I am getting my turkey from a farm I know near where I grew up in Lancashire. They are free range, pretty much organic (although not certified) and I know where it will have come from. Unfortunately, they don't deliver to London (they'd make a killing if they did) but it fits in with our travel plans this year to collect it. This won't work next year, so I shall be following this thread with interest!
