Below is the standard list I give to anyone heading to NYC. So far no complaints!

2. the "black" part should be a nice deep, dark brown

Hamburgers: Rare on Bleeker and Carmine, The Coner Bistro (W. Village), NY Burger on 6th and 23rd (more fast foodish in style, but still delish for a quick lunch).

If you're up for it a great way to spend an afternoon is to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and go to Grimaldi's pizza in Brooklyn, it's right at the end of the bridge, you can ask anyone and they'll point you there.

Shopping; Soho and NoLita, Soho stands for South of Houston (Street)
Walk around Chinatown
NoLita is North of Little Italy, basically, East of Soho.
Uptown, Madison Ave and Fifth are the posh shops, starting around 57th street up to the late 70's.

If you're feeling really adventurous, go to Staten Island (Ferry is free) and go to the Chinese Scholar's Garden. So nice.
Take the Circle Line on a nice day. Technically touristy, but I LOVE it, used to go all the time.
