Maybe the answer is to ask the pupils to quote sources and insist they list say 10 sources in an essay and quote the source /or in part and say why it is agreeable or disagreeable to the set contention / objective. This would be introducing pupils to a standard usually not used below A-Level standard, but then again it is not an impossible hurdle and of course half the point of an essay is to show how good you are referencing back to what you learn't in class - in other words, here your handling will show your grasp of the detail and agility to research.
(If I understand it correctly AI does NOT list it sources or there are so many it would take longer to wade through them then to write the essay without AI))
