'Trying new stuff can be scary. But when children know that itโs okay to mess up, theyโre more willing to take risks and seek out more interesting and inventive solutions.

Children need a safe and supportive place to try new things in writing. When they feel safe to make mistakes, they're more likely to be creative and grow.

It's important to gently guide and support them, but ultimately your child should be doing the โheavy liftingโ rather than you or their teacher.

If I donโt know how to spell a word, I'll admit that Iโm not sure and say it's okay because I can look it up! This helps children to see that itโs ok to โnot knowโ and that tapping into a state of resourcefulness is key.

I tell them that famous authors work on multiple drafts. This helps to normalise perseverance and improvement over the dreaded perfectionism, which is more of a hindrance than a help.

I encourage children to keep a personal writing journal, so they have a private space to express their thoughts, ideas and feelings.

As a teacher, I may highlight my own moments of struggle with writerโs block and how I work through them.'
