Have you contacted Dyslexia Action? it is the UK association to help parents and teachers with the Dyslexia. They have a directory with tutors and you might find one in your area.

Although I would say with dyslexia nothing works and everything does. There is not a method or a magical solution that will help your child as everyone is different and you need to understand how he process the information and then tailor making the help around him.

We used toe by toe until we had a private tutor and then she helped my daughter in ways she benefited better. Plus the school has its own ways and all together is slowly working,

Things you can do are:
- Play memory games, cards, or sequences as that is one of the main problems of children with dyslexia the lack of short term memory
- Repetition, repetition, repetition
- Go to your local library and look for books his reading age that are interesting, and not just Biff & Co ;-)
- download books for him to listen so you keep him interested in what a book can offer you as fun
- put him in drama classes it is great for helping them to speak up and being the center of the attention for the right reasons, or if sporty anything that helps concentration and focus like karate, fencing,..
- you need to raise his self confidence, as he might feel a bit low, make him feel he is great as he is.
- lots of patience around his ways of processing the information
- a great book for all of you to read and for him to understand that is nothing "bad" having dyslexia is [b]"Dyslexia talking through it"[/b] by Althea we took it to school and every teacher in every class read it to the pupils to make them realised that it is nothing to feel bad or ashamed about and they all need to help their peers with it.

[u]May I give you my most important advice?[/u] Your son IS NOT dyslexic, you son HAS dyslexia, as well as he has green/blue/brown eyes, small/big lips...it is another thing that makes him who he is BUT it does not define him as a whole.
Don't let others do that to him either I am quite firm about this as my daughter has dyslexia as well as many other wonderful things.

I used toe by toe for my 8 year son too and he really benefitted from it, but it takes commitment as you have to do it every day for at least 10 minutes, doesn't sound a lot but it is when they find it hard. My son got into Dulwich College in the end so we were delighted! I also used Alexandra Beeley alexbeeleyks@gmail.com for my daughter to gain confidence in maths. Hope that helps.

I dont know any tutor sorry but i m dyslexic. What helps is to put on top of what i need to read a yellow translucid plastic A4 and suddenly i see the letters the way a non dyslexic see.
Find his colour. And a tutor/speech therapist. It will help. Good of you to have noticed at 8. I got a duagnosis at 36!! Good luck.

Does anyone know a good tutor for an 8 yr old dyslexic boy? We'd rather the tutor come to us in SW12 as I have other activities to work around. does anyone have any good advice of things that have helped in their experience? His main area of weakness is reading. :idea:
