Sorry, just to clarify at Coyne Medical we are currently charging £240 per dose for non-members of the clinic, which includes a GP consultation, the vaccine, updating records and any follow-up required.

To put this in perspective private GP clinics in locally in Fulham and Battersea were charging £180 to £215 per dose of vaccination before the dire national shortage. Some pharmacies and travel clinics were giving the vaccine at a much lower cost.

You could try Prive Health - they have a clinic in Battersea and have imported the vaccine from France. I don't recall what they are charging but it's not £480 a dose!

Thanks for contacting us about the meningitis B vaccine. I know it is terribly expensive at the moment. As has already been mentioned on this board the manufacturer (GlaxoSmithKline) is not releasing any supplies for private vaccinations. This does apply equally whether the vaccination is done by an NHS or private GP.

We are a private practice and look after many children and newborns. Many of our children had received only 1 dose of the vaccine before the shortage and needed their boosters as soon as possible, and our newborn patient require their newborn immunisations. Hence we took the unusual step of importing the vaccine from overseas. Unfortunately this means that the costs are significantly higher than normal.

We will absolutely be charging a lower price for our patients when we are able to get a supply from GlaxoSmithKline. Another reason for going ahead and arranging a supply from overseas was that they are unable to tell us when this may be. The official response is "Summer 2016". When supplies resume there is also likely to be strict quotas and so the shortage does not appear likely to be over quickly.

I hope this explains the reasons for the high cost at the moment. If you are on our mailing list we will definitely let you know when we have a UK supply and the cost is reduced.

Got an email from Coyne medical to say they had this back in stock -

Has anyone found anywhere doing it recently for a more reasonable price?

I had my 2 year old vaccinated last Friday at Chatfield medical centre - the gp that I am registered with. They did it for £110 per jab (he will have the second in April). You have to be registered but I was surprised that they had it given the general shortage.

Boots at Westfield do it for £90 per jab - if they can get hold of the vaccine, its in short supply

I also had my 3 kids vaccinated at Wimbledon park travel clinic. They were the cheapest and very nice people. I think I paid 130 per dose and our kids needed two each. It was just a few months ago we did it and I am surprised now there are 200 people waiting at this clinic!

My baby missed the NHS May 1st cut off by 48 hours; at 9 1/2 months old she is still in the vulnerable under 1 category.

It appears that every clinic in the UK (and NI) has been restricted from administering to new patients until June at the very least. Wimbledon Travel Clinic has well over 200 people on the waiting list already.

Does anyone know if it is possible to pay privately in France? Or has anyone come up with any other loopholes or avenues to obtain the vaccine rather than wait 6 months?

Please accept my apologies for any offence. I am well aware that there have been several very well publicised tragic deaths of young children from meningitis in the news recently.
Which is why I wished to reassure, we have had lots of calls this week from mums very anxious to have their children vaccinated and worried about delays caused by the national shortage.
There are several causes of meningitis, Meningitis B in particular has a peak of incidence at 5 months.
If anyone is interested this and lots more impartial information is available from the Meningitis Research Foundation (http://www.meningitis.org/menb-vaccine).

Plus the risk is under one year olds and not six months.

There are also many children who are diagnosed with meningitis over that age - you only have to look in the press the last couple of days.
