Oh and thanks Lizzie,

my son is with Nationwide who won't cash it - so we are weighing up the cost and faf of opening up a Barclays account as you suggest just to get some money back before the cheque expires!

"Cheque Cashing Services" as run by pawnbrokers etc will only do it for an amount over £200 and they say it can take 8 weeks to clear!

Never mind we'll sort it one way or another!

Thanks again

And I'm now really embarrassed that I didn't think to mail you to say I was going to write that in the weekly email.

Errrr hope you don't mind - I thought it was the best way to get a result for you!

:-)

I regularly pay in USD dividend cheques to my Barclays account. The transaction fee is around £5 but the exchange rate you get isn't great. Just go to the foreign currency window and tell them you need to pay in a USD cheque to your account

OH MY GOSH

Just noticed in Annabels weekly email that she had to reassure everyone that this was not a scam to get your hard earned money! *blush* :o

Now she said it I can see what she means...

Don't worry I won't be knocking on your door to "Cash a Giro"  :D  ...I bet that date's me - do they have unemployment Giro's anymore?

if he has a bank account it can be done "by negotiation" and costs about £10 per transaction.
cheque cashing shops should be able to help but will also charge for the service.

Hi all,

my Son has a $80 refund cheque from a US university that they refuse to issue in sterling.

Not much - but a lot to a struggling student!

Nationwide cannot cash it unless he sets up an expensive $ account which isn't worth it.

Can anyone please suggest a solution  - cheque expires in 10 days! :o

Thanks in advance
