Re: Second Steps Nursery

Both of my children went there. They loved it as did we. The staff are great and the owner has a wealth of child care qualifications and most importantly experience. She really knows children as do many of the others staff some of whom have been there for about 20 years (even though they're young). ...

Re: Nursery recommendations

'Second Steps' on Ravenslea Road is very, very good. Both of my two went there. The owner has years of experience with kids (including many formal qualifications) as do the staff. They really do understand little ones. Very loving caring environment. Lots of trips out - including weekly swimming. Th...

Re: Newton Prep or Thomas's

Hello, both of my kids go to NP and love it. We live in Balham. Though kids do come from far and wide, the majority live close-by (I'm including Balham) and enough so that the play-date /birthday party you are invited to might be closer to where you live than to the school. Like StephA says, transpo...

Re: Mother-in-law not well, should I allow my son to visit?

I'm so sorry. I have not had personal experience but I work in a hospital and have seen this sort of thing when it involves children. I think that it depends upon a number of factors but crucially how emotionally mature your son is. Also your MIL's life-expectancy and condition. She may even have co...

Re: Au pair agency missed mental health issues with our au p

Thanks. Yes, I telephone and/or skype interview for about an hour. There are numerous forms with the application, differing between agencies in the country of origin - some ask about mental health, others do not. Multiple, long references: tick boxes and free-text all in one form, with translation. ...

Re: Au pair agency missed mental health issues with our au p

Thanks everyone - interesting that this is not new. I was so surprised.
I will put it in writing that I would like to see the outcome of the agency's investigation and try very hard to ensure that they change where needed.
You live and learn.

Re: Au pair agency missed mental health issues with our au p

Thanks both for your helpful advice. The au pair agency has a branch in this au pair's country. In fact to deal with the current problems, the au pair spoke in their native tongue to the branch based in their country. I am going to ask to see the form. I am a medical doctor - we could get in to trou...

Au pair agency missed mental health issues with our au pair

Hello, After a successful interview, our new au pair arrived a week or so ago. After a mildly shaky start due to what I thought was jet lag, it transpires that the au pair has been receiving therapy in their native country. Our au pair states that they do not feel well enough to work and after much ...

Re: Aggressive nanny

You definitely did the right thing. These little ones cannot speak up for themselves - so she is so wrong. I hope that the parents read this and sack her quite frankly. Our nursery gave me a nudge to say that our child-carer wasn't 'coping'. I don't think she could ever have been unkind to our child...

Childcarer needed for school drop off and pick up

Hello, We have two small children (2.5 yrs and nearly 4yrs) and are looking for someone on Tuesdays and Thursdays to start at 7:30am to help get them ready and then do nursery & school drop off and then two pick ups: one at midday and one at 5:30pm. After that childcare needed for both children ...

Also, upper bathroom leaking through the ceiling in to the lower bathroom this week - possibly through a cracked shower tray. Got to fix tha...

Re: Newton Prep V Eaton House

Thank you. Your point about the commute is a good one and it is playing on my mind but I will take your advice and try some dummy runs. Best wishes.

Re: Newton Prep V Eaton House

Thank you all. We are lucky to have these good schools around us. We got offered a place at Newton nursery and will probably take it, despite now travelling in the wrong direction from my place of work to get there! Eaton Prep sounds wonderful too but we cannot look around it before we have to pay N...

Re: Newton Prep V Eaton House

Firstly, thank you all so much for your responses. We live in Balham (not too far from Hornsby House!) and the reason that I first heard of Newton Prep is that I used to take the train with the children and I was so impressed by the level of conversation! EH does well in some very well known guides,...
