Save Tooting Market - Crossrail shaft

Some of you may have seen this in Time Out today - there is a petition going to try to prevent Tooting Market from being destroyed in order to build a Crossrail shaft. This is shocking to me - people's livelihoods and a symbol of Tooting's vibrant international community are at stake. Please sign th...

Re: Do local faith schools demand money from parents?

And just to add - it is also quite hard for faith schools to raise funds through sponsorship from companies, community groups etc other than the church. I know from experience - I hit a brick wall quite a few times because the religious link disqualifies them from a lot of types of funding! I'm not ...

Re: Do local faith schools demand money from parents?

I'm not going to join in the debate about the pros and cons of faith schools but just to point out livegreen that actually faith schools don't receive as much state funding as non-faith state schools. This is because their premises are provided by the church. So for example, say you need to expand t...

Re: St anselms and st boniface

For what it's worth (as there seem to be more replies to this thread about St Anselms than St Boniface), St Boniface is a great school as well. Its headteacher, Mrs Kerins, is amazing and knows all children in the school by name and is the driving force (in my opinion) behind the school's success (a...

Re: CROSSRAIL 2 VENTILATION SHAFT (AGAIN)

KatherineHepburn - I completely agree. The stats, petitions, all the information out there seems to be completely misleading. What I am really concerned about now is that the plan will revert to Tooting but it will then be too late for Tooting residents to have a say. I personally responded to the c...

Re: CROSSRAIL 2 VENTILATION SHAFT (AGAIN)

Thanks for the summary, that's really useful. As a parent of small children, the timing of the event was difficult for me but it's useful to have a summary. Also having seen the summary of the meeting it doesn't seem like Tooting residents are having their say at all, and that the majority of attend...

Re: CROSSRAIL 2 VENTILATION SHAFT (AGAIN)

Thanks Boobelle, I had seen the Tooting online forum previously and the comments posted there. An online forum isn't necessarily representative of everyone's views. (Yes, it would be good to have better transport links to St George's but frankly we already have the Northern Line and Tooting railway ...

Re: CROSSRAIL 2 VENTILATION SHAFT (AGAIN)

As a Tooting resident, let me just state for the record that not everyone in Tooting is enamoured with the proposals. Just as Balham residents are trying to push the Crossrail station back to Tooting for various reasons (including the value of house prices in Balham), surprise surprise, many people ...

Re: CROSSRAIL 2 VENTILATION SHAFT (AGAIN)

Has anyone considered the impact on the traffic in Tooting High Street and around Tooting Broadway if the Tooting proposal goes through? That is a massively gridlocked area, and there are several primary schools in the immediate vicinity. Where can I find information regarding the proposals and the ...

Re: Controversial question regarding faith schools

@PrincessLeia - no matter what the 'official' policy is, I think you'll find that most faith schools do teach about other religions. My child's (faith) school organises fairly regular visits to places of worship of other religions and teaches the children about other religions from an early age. I m...

Re: Controversial question regarding faith schools

Wheresmyschool - please could you let this forum know which faith school your friend was talking about? To be clear, they should not be doing what you describe and in my experience the faith schools are very strict and legalistic about the admissions criteria - i.e. they stick to it very closely so ...

Re: Domestic sprinkler system - recommendation?

Hi, we used Triangle Fire Systems, and found them to be good. I can't say how much it would cost because it really depends on how many floors you need to install sprinklers in, and how big your house is. One thing I would say, though, is that you should make sure that you cater for additional costs ...

Re: Tooting Primary School

I have heard good things of Broadwater. The problem with the free schools (and by this I mean TPS and Rutherford House) is lack of track record. We put them down as choices but at the bottom of our list because it's a bit risky. Whether you decide to take that risk depends on your options I guess. H...

Re: Tooting Primary School

Fircroft is one of the schools I visited and really liked. I know one set of parents whose son is in year 5 and couldn't speak more highly of it. I would recommend visiting and seeing for yourself.
