Re: Insects (ants?) near window

Flying ants -  Every summer, there is a day when thousands huge flying ants suddenly emerge from their nests all over the UK - a phenomenon known as Flying Ant Day. Some people might have already noticed some of the creatures buzzing around. This is because the flying ant period can last a few week...

Re: Refusing to have MIL for Xmas?

Oh Dear! If your husband won't take the baton up to talk to his parents and 'explain' the codes of being a good house guest in your house, then I would go away! I agree Christmas traditions need to be moved around a little to stop them becoming a burden and a little stale and obligated Skiing sounds...

Re: Restaurants that don't pass the service charge to staff

Sad to say, this is probably not an isolated incident. When we are in a restaurant, and paying by card, if he can my hubs removes the service charge off the bill and will leave the cash tip on the table. This means that there's a good chance that the kind person who served us will be able to get it....

Re: Garden Help!

I firmly believe that understanding a particular pest or disease puts you well on the way to solving the problem. Honey fungus lives in dead and decaying roots, tree stumps and other woody items in the soil. It grows out from these in the form of black root-like rhizomorphs ('bootlaces') at the rate...

Re: large sycamore - keep or replace?

The issue here is that the sycamore probably planted itself - and here we can call it a weed tree. Sycamores are extremely efficient at spreading their seed, and unless you remain vigilant and pull them out when you see them, then they will grow to a point where (if you are in a conservation area) t...

Re: Commuter demands "where is the baby" before giving up se

I was on a train a couple of years ago when an elderly and frail lady staggered on and stood looking rather helpless - the train was full of teenagers. mainly boys. Seeing that no-one was going to move, I appealed to one young man that he would be doing a great service if he would offer his seat to ...

Re: Small lottery win: advice wanted

Congratulations! I remember musing over such a think happening to me a few years back, and wondering what I would do. If the win was significant (i.e. h-u-g-e) then I was going to get a solicitor to collect it on my behalf and then sit on it for a month or two - might seem extreme - The minute that ...

Re: Kitchen recommendations

West London Kitchens are truly fab - and you should talk to them to understand their offering. Instead of showing you brochure after brochure (it's at this stage thatI go into information overload) they will take you to see some of their finished kitchens, with real live and appreciative kitchen own...

Re: fraudulent planning permission

This is awful! I suggest that before you go off to find a lawyer that you put a call in to Verconica Congden - an architect - who is extremely well versed in Planning laws, and the do's and don'ts. 07984 069 145 http://www.veronicacongdondesign.co.uk Good luck, and tell her that Auntie Planty sent y...

Re: Does a detox work?

I did a 9-day detox a couple of years ago. I knew that I drank a lot of tea during the day, but hadn't realised the impact this would have on the programme. My 'not drinking this huge amount' gave me the biggest headache ever and I felt really awful. Detoxing is a good idea, and if you are embarking...

I have alerted a friend of mine who has 2 boys at Collis, and hopefully she will respond - no point me saying anything as it is all a bit second hand (but good) information!
