Re: Would you look through your daughter's phone?

We have four teens - the contract we have always had with them, from the moment they got their phones, is that their phones will be checked by us on a regular basis either with or without them present. I did this often when they were Y7, and less frequently in Y8 and 9 (my youngest is 14 and in Y9),...

Re: University allowances - advice needed please

Our eldest went last year - to an Oxbridge college - and seems to live on fresh air - he manages to save a significant portion of the c£100 a week that he has left to live on, partially because all he seemingly has time for is rowing, working and the odd trip to the pub/college bar, and partially be...

Re: Pet insurance recommendation advice

I know plenty of people who just put money into an account every month in lieu of insuring, and if you are lucky, that will really work well. However, in our case, that wouldn't have touched the sides of what it cost - our retriever had cancer at 18 months, and the diagnosis/specialists cost upwards...

Re: Estranged friend reached out as she is getting married. Not sure how to respond

"X thanks Y for their kind invitation to their wedding, but regrets they are unable to attend" would be my response.  You don't have a friendship any more, so why would you go and celebrate a significant event in her life?

You've moved on, and she probably should too......

Re: Switching from indy to state for Oxbridge

That is a funny extract. As an aside -as the parent of a (first year) Cambridge student, I also find the implication from some of my friends who are privately educating, that my son just 'swanned in' because he's from a state school background, really offensive. He achieved 4 A stars in STEM subject...

Re: University Fees and cost

I have one at uni, and another heading there in Sept (with two more coming along...!). It is slightly up to you as to whether you want to pay their fees AND their maintenance which could easily be £20k a year. However, most people I know take the loans for the fees, and then have to top up the maint...

Re: Does being privately educated mean discrimination at job interviews?

We moved out of SW11 some time ago and my eldest has benefitted from an outstanding state grammar education and is holding an Oxbridge offer (fingers crossed for next week!) - but he has had no benefit from being state educated. Contextual offers have meant he's had to put down our household income,...

Re: Are airports as bad as the papers say?

We flew from LGW North to Madrid on 23rd July, returning last Sat (6th).  We went with Easyjet and I'd been dreading it due to all of the publicity. But we flew through the airports - here and in Spain, and didn't spend more than 5 minutes in passport control at the Spanish end when we arrived. We d...

Re: Any local families considering getting a puppy?

Surely you should speak to the breeder? In our contract with ours, it was stipulated that the puppy should be offered back to the breeder first before offering the dog anywhere else.  That is assuming that you have bought the dog through official, proper, paperworked channels and not a puppy farm.  ...

Re: friends wants to bail on villa at last moment without payment

I'm going against the prevailing opinion to say that I have sympathy with your friends - we pulled out of a gite in France (going with my parents, although we all agreed to do so) the day before the final balance was due, because of the imposition of quarantine.  I was devastated as this was a cance...

Re: in laws offering to pay for son not daughter schools fees

Working mum with 2kids - I never get the argument that you shouldn't educate women because they might end up as stay at home mothers. Even if you were a misogynist, surely having a well educated stay at home mother will stimulate and challenge their children (and sons) intellectually and be able to...

Re: in laws offering to pay for son not daughter schools fees

I'm another one echoing those saying don't do this - my brother and I were privately educated and I see the damage that was done to families when the girls were not treated the same because it was felt boys were more important. It has caused huge resentment and problems down the line for many.  (We...

Re: Controversial question regarding faith schools

I think it's worth pointing out that for Catholic schools at least, a large percentage of Sunday's offertory donations go towards the diocesan schools fund - in my parents' small parish (of mainly elderly churchgoers) it's around 40% of Sunday's takings, so those who are active Catholics (rather tha...

Re: Gear for working in Russia

I lived in Russia for a year so did one winter with average temps of -30.....the kit you have is really important. There is a reason, whatever your views, that they wear fur - because it really does keep you very warm! I did buy a fur hat there, but before I went I bought expensive North Face type s...

Re: giving up work with school age children

The administrivia of being a mother of school-age children these days is just crazy! And homework needs get greater and greater....especially up until year 6. I can't imagine leaving that to a 3rd party when so much is at stake. And having strong relationships with the school, and other parents fro...
