Re: Can't affford a house near Northcote Rod. Where next? Tooting or Colliers Wood?

Hi. I’d also suggest Streatham Hill and Streatham more generally. For similar reasons to the other comments - schools, green spaces, amenities (cinema, Lido, shops etc) and good transport links (overground plus lots of buses to Brixton to get you a seat on the Victoria line). And I disagree with the...

Re: Primary school: Henry Cavendish Balham site or Telferscot

Hi. A Henry Cavendish parent here, just to give you a view of HC. My eldest left last year (after year 6); my youngest is still at HC. We have been very happy with the school. It isn’t perfect, but I don’t think any school is and I think the community feel and school ethos is spot on. They don’t “se...

Re: What car should I buy?

Partly repeating a previous reply, but I would consider not buying a car. We are in a similar position in not using a car much during the week, rather using one more for weekends away. We decided at the start of the year to do without our own car. Instead we use Zip cars, other local hire car compan...

Re: Secondary school: Burntwood vs La Retraite

Similar to KJG, we didn’t look at La Retraite but our daughter is in year 7 at Burntwood. She is very happy there and we have been impressed so far. As KJG said, the buildings and space are also fantastic. I think it’s an underrated school.

Re: Hornsby House, White House, Telferscot or Henry Cavendish

Our kids have been at Henry Cavendish and we’ve had a very good experience. As well as the educational side, supplemented by lots of school trips, visits by external guests and an improved after school offering, it feels like a real community - most children live very close by and the PTFA organise ...

Re: Stay BTC or move to Telford Park

We moved from Balham to Telford Park 4 years ago, so I can’t compare directly to a move from BTC, but there are probably some parallels to be drawn. We moved for a larger house and garden, which has been hugely beneficial. We are still within walking distance of our children’s primary school, which ...

After school nanny wanted in Balham

I am looking for a reliable and caring after school nanny for my daughter (6) and son (4). Ideally we would like someone Monday to Thursday with a 3.30pm school pick up from Henry Cavendish (Balham), working until 6.30 or 6.45pm, but there is some flexibility in days/ hours.

Re: Tips for a new working mom

One extra suggestion to those above is to use a list sharing app. My husband and I use Wunderlist. We have separate lists for our to dos, grocery shopping and also use it to keep lists of present ideas (mainly for the kids!), places we want to visit, films/programmes we want to watch. It means we ca...

Re: Looking for a place to stop en route to Cornwall

We usually get up early and then stop en route for breakfast too. But lots of other people usually have the same time at peak holiday times! Hopefully you'd be ok in a few weeks time. On the way home from Cornwall, suggest Lydiard Park just off the M4 at Swindon. A country park with a great playgrou...

Re: Primary state schools Balham

My daughter is in year 1 at Henry Cavendish. She has settled in really well and is enjoying school even with the "step up" from reception to year 1, which I'm sure has much to do with the school. From what I know (and as you can see from the other posts) there are lots of great schools loc...

Re: Size of birthday party in Year 1

My daughter has started in year 1. So far she has been invited to 2 parties, at least one of which had been for the whole class. However I know 2 other children in the class have had a much smaller joint party where just a handful of the class were invited. I don't think my daughter has minded - I'm...

Re: How do you choose a hospital?

I've had 2 pretty good experiences of giving birth at St George's. But as other posts have already said, you will find people who have had good and bad experiences at all hospitals. I'd therefore also advocate considering the convenience of getting to/from your hospital; not just for your appointmen...

Re: Recommendations for presents for 5-year old girl please!

What about taking her to the theatre or another event/experience? You could give her a ticket if you still want her to have something to open on the day. There are some great local theatres that do kids productions or you go big and take her to the West End.

Re: Do you pay your after school nanny travel time?

Our nanny's hours start at 3.15 for a 3.30 school pick up. Usually not needed but means she can go to our house first to pick up snacks/scooter etc if needed depending on what our daughter is doing after school.
