Re: Has anyone succeeded in lobbying Wandsworth council to slow down traffic on their road?

I agree: gathering data is a powerful tool. And you do need to start with your local councillors - find the one whose role most closely fits streets/traffic/safety. Research who is responsible for the implementation of traffic calming in your area. Are there children walking to school along the road...

Re: Did it help partner's career when you gave up work?

Like Moonlightdawn I think it is important to work - part time is ideal. You will continue to have work in common, you can talk about your work at social events and it gives you a status you risk losing if you give up altogether. Giving up is likely to change the dynamic of your relationship and tha...

Re: COSY PRIVATE GP WANTED FOR HOME VISITS - SW18

NHS GPs are only required to do home visits to elderly people if they agree there is a specific need and the NHS hasn’t done ear syringing for a number of years. Regarding NHS services for elderly people, Age UK have a v good fact sheet and helpline. But perhaps you mean a private GP?

Re: TV screens in bedrooms for gaming?

I have two boys and a girl. The oldest boy was absolutely addicted to gaming and we let him have the screen in his room. I managed to do some rather feeble deal regarding gaming time and piano practice but he spent literally every spare moment on it. I also thought some of the games were quite viole...

Re: Suggestions for Bath or Devon to break long journey to Cornwall

Beer is a beautiful place, not as packed as some and you have the seaside there plus Pecorama, a charming and traditional amusement park aimed at young children and with a famous miniature railway. Lyme Regis is similarly appealing and has some really high end eateries. Ditto Topsham. A perfect plac...

Re: Manager keeps tips

I also think he could say to the manager ‘people are asking me if serving staff get a share if the tips so what do I say?’ This is probably true and might flush out what is SUPPOSED to happen. But it is pretty brutal out there and sometimes they just have to grit their teeth and try to find a better...

Re: Manager keeps tips

Yes, all three of ours have worked in hospitality, ranging from high class events catering to down and dirty pubs. I really sympathise with your son, who no doubt put heart and soul into his job and now feels gutted, especially as tips can be generous at events. Unfortunately hospitality appears to ...

Re: URGENT ACTION REQUIRED : The ridiculous Labour 'Private School VAT' scam ...

The practice of holding a state school place as an insurance while applying for private places has been going on for a long time but Educationmatters' proposal would simply mean more children down for state schools starting reception in a really distressing situation. And speaking from experience, t...

Re: Apology for state of Wandsworth Common

Against a background where councils are going bust, I’d be reassured that Wandsworth are taking this seriously, ensuring their contract with the circus is enforced and that they aren’t left picking up what is likely to be a very substantial bill. this_is_cat: be careful what you wish for.

Re: Weekly big shop?

I’m curious: if you are watching the pennies why would you buy branded soap powder as opposed to a supermarket’s own-brand equivalent? It’s not as if it’s on show to anyone else.

Re: Madrid or Barcelona? Any suggestions much appreciated.

I’d go for Barcelona at this time of year. Plenty of atmosphere, foodie attractions, see the Sagrada Familia before they finish it … and you have seafoody, arty Sitges just a short hop away along the coast.

Re: How much cash for a wedding gift?

Most couples ask for money these days with young people often stating it is to fund their honeymoon. For recent weddings we have given £200 for a family of 5. If it was just husband and me I think we’d give about £100/150 depending on how well we knew the couple. If it was an older couple marrying o...

Re: Should we go to Centreparcs with a potentially infectious child?

I’d say stay at home. It is massively infectious and your daughter is pretty much certain of getting it. Other parents are likely to notice your son's spots (or remains of spots) especially if you go swimming. And what can be a mild bout with one child can be much more severe with another, making th...

Re: Neighbour's dachshund barking aggressively many times a day

When our lovely neighbours acquired two jack russells we had the same problem - in stereo! They stood at the front window and literally barked at every passer-by, all day long. Are the owners of your sausage dog out during the day? In which case (like our neighbours) they may be unaware of the probl...

Re: Measles – The Outbreak You Need to Know About

Another really important reason to vaccinate is that rubella (which can be almost symptomless to the person who catches it) can seriously damage the foetuses of pregnant women. I’m surprised this isn’t mentioned more. And yes, measles it at best miserable and at worse, very dangerous. I had it befor...
