Either 1 or 2 weeks wages is the norm depending on how long they've been with you.

I think a weeks wages (rounded up) is more than enough. By the time you tip the postman, the nanny, the bin men it gets expensive...

I am curious, how on earth do you tip the bin men? I have thought about doing it but never did as couldn't figure out how. Surely you don't just leave an envelope taped to the bin? I live on a v busy road and if I did that I couldn't be sure that a random person didn't take their chances on their way home from a night out! Also in the morning when they come it's too early for me to be up, usually before 6 am. They might not even see it? Am I completely missing something?

Probably too late now anyway.

As for the cleaner, we give a week's wages rounded up plus a small gift for her (usually worth around £30).

What is it with this country and tipping.

I've thought long and hard about this and whether I should tip my cleaner. Why do we need to?

Bin men knocking your door are probably not your bin men
We have had guys trying it in who were definitely not our bin men

My husband is a soft touch for bin men, he gave them a tenner but I have heard of people leaving out a case of beer which I think is kind of cool. I hope they were really bin men, they came round in the evening but he said they smelled like bin men.

My cleaner gets a week's wages, but she is lovely and very short of money.

Does anyone give the milkman something? I never see him, thought I might leave him a fiver.

I tipped almost four weeks of wages to our cleaner, as she has been with us for 3 years and although she started cleaning for us in North London, she now travels a long way to see us every two weeks.

I would personally be comfortable with one to two week's wages in most cases but I'm sure that any amount would be gratefully recieved!

I paid mine a £100, which works out at a month's bonus.

If I got this from work I would be pleased at the little bonus, it's not a lot but it's enough to add to your income and would make you smile.

It's exactly that, a bonus, so anything is a bonus really but I do think cash is the most appropriate mechanism.
