What’s On at Wandsworth Museum: October half term family activities
Wandsworth Museum is an independent, regional museum which houses an enormous and eclectic collection exploring the compelling and dramatic story of Wandsworth’s history over a 25,000 year time span.
‘Tudor Day’ Tuesday 26th October 10.00-16.00
Come and join us in the museum’s galleries and learning centre for our ‘Tudor Day’. A range of activities will provide an insight into Tudor life in Wandsworth and includes games, smell boxes, costumes and object handling as well as discovering how a Tudor apothecary would have treated illnesses of the day.
‘Wandsworth, My Life, My World Writing Workshop’ Wednesday 27th October 10.00-12.00
Come along to a special writing workshop, be inspired by artefacts from the museum and get help from a professional writer with your entry for the competition. This event is a Wandsworth Council Family Learning Event. To book places please call Lucin Marshall on 020 8871 7601 or lmarshall1@wandsworth.gov.uk. Please note that museum entry is not needed to attend this event and attendees will be able to purchase annual membership at half price, thanks to support from Wandsworth Council Family Learning Department.
‘Toy stories’ Thursday 28th October 10.00-12.00 and 14.00-16.00
Toys and our memories of them create some of the most unforgettable experiences of our childhood. Before toys were mass produced, children made their own. Find out about some of the first toys to be manufactured in Wandsworth. Interact with historic toys; shine the spotlight into the dressed rooms of our own doll’s house. Make your own toys; play with Tudor and Victorian toys and uncover the stories behind some of the museum’s best-loved toys. This is a hands-on event with toys of all shapes and sizes to discover: from spinning tops to a push along penguin!
‘Mapping the Centuries’ Friday 29th October 10.00-12.00 and 14.00-16.00
Come and take part as we explore our enormous floor maps of Wandsworth from 1760, 1880 and the present day. We peel back the centuries to discover some of the most amazing stories about Wandsworth’s past and how it has evolved. Using a grid referencing system for older children we reveal and map some of the weird and wonderful things that have happened here. For younger children there are interactive games with toys to highlight the exciting history of the borough through the ages.
All events are free for Museum Members unless otherwise specified
