St Anselms waiting list

Postby Honeybee » Tue Apr 22, 2014 12:13 pm

We have found out that we're very high up on the St Anselms waiting list but wondering whether anyone has any experience of how likely it is we might get a place before September? I've spoken to the council and obviously they can't tell you much as it depends whether anyone declines the place between now and September. I just wondered whether anyone has any inside info (people likely to decline, or how it worked in past years). It's a small school so am wondering whether I should give up hope?!

I got 3 kids into Holy Ghost from the waiting list within 6 months. Not sure what your alternatives are, but hang in there. There is always movement. St. Anselem's is apparently on par with Holy Ghost...and totally worth waiting.

http://www.theguardian.com/education/20 ... ot-private

You don't necessarily get a 'better' education in a private school - and that applies to the academic stuff as well as the social. You do get smaller class sizes but the most important thing for primary aged children is that you and your child like the 'feel' of the school. You are an engaged and proactive parent so you will add immeasurably to your child's education anyway. A lot of the perceived difference between private and state is simply that - private schools usually have a higher proportion of parents already adding educational capital to their children's lives so the 'results' appear better when so much of that difference is actually just due to the intake. I've heard lovely things about Wix - if you like the 'feel', go for it! (You can put the fees away in an account for your child's first flat!).

St Anselms and Holy Ghost are state schools.

Hi Honeybee

We are hoping to get a place for our little boy at St Anselms next year.

Just to give us an idea, do you know how many places this year were for non siblings? Or how big the catchment was this year? Or where to find this info?

Thanks

Hi Martina1

I'm not sure as I have never asked those questions of the council, but I heard on the grapevine that about half of the places were allocated to siblings. If you find out please let me know as I'd be interested to hear!

Good luck with the application next year.

Below is the admission info for this year for St Anselm's, and also for Holy Ghost and St Boniface for those who are interested. Honeybee is correct that half the places went to siblings.

St Anselm's:
Cat 2 and 15 siblings. Distance was 826m.
http://www.stanselms.wandsworth.sch.uk/ ... nformation

Holy Ghost:
Cat 2 and 15 siblings. Dist was 1059m.

St Boniface:
Cat 3 and 15 siblings. Dist was 1489m.

BTW Can I use this post to advertise the St Anselm's school fair which is on Sunday 11 May from 12 noon to 4 p.m. If you are interested in the school it's a great chance to come along and see it in action.

Thanks for the info on St Anselms. I now just need to get a pedometer and work out how far I am!

We're away on holiday so won't be able to go to the fair this year, but thanks for the reminder.

Actually distances are measured as the crow flies this year so you can get a rough idea by using this website: http://www.freemaptools.com/how-far-is-it-between.htm

Do any of the further down the list criteria ever get a chance of St. Anselms i.e. not baptised but live close to the school? According to the calculator, I am 148m away.

Unfortunately no. At least not in living memory. Every year there are Catholics who attend Mass weekly at St Anselm's who live too far from the school to be admitted. I have friends who are not Catholic but who would love their son to go to St Anselm's and would be as near as you are, but no chance of getting admitted.

I don't want to get into the rights and wrongs of faith schools, but I will say that there is huge demand for places in Holy Ghost, St Anselm's and St. Boniface - easily enough to fill another class of 30 a year. Unfortunately, the sites of these schools don't have room for expansion. It would be great if there were more places at Catholic primary schools in the area - not only for Catholics but also that there would be room for non-Catholics as well. Unfortunately, any new Catholic school in this part of London brings out a lot of hostility, e.g. St Richard Reynolds in Richmond a couple of years ago and Trinity Academy in Brixton at the moment.

The other thing that I will say is that at least the area is well-served by state primary schools, i.e. there are enough places and the quality of the schools is good - Hillbrook (now outstanding), Fircroft (good) and Rutherford House (a bit unknown yet but becoming very popular).
