What online shops do you recommend for clothes?

Postby Sunny007 » Sat May 17, 2014 8:38 pm

hi there

i'm a size 12-14, average height and 39 years old and in desperate need for some inspiration for where to by decent clothes - in particular work clothes.

I'd prefer to buy clothes on line if possible (easier with the kids etc.) but I'm stuck for good places to shop. Everything is either a bit too frumpy or else it all seems too young. I really want to get the balance of classic/contemporary work clothes without being too frumpy....

Can anyone suggest good online retailers?

Boden is popular for online shopping but i do find it all the loud patterns a bit annoying, and some of the longer hemlines on their work clothes are a bit old fashioned. Baukjen - seems good but I doubt I have that perfect figure which you need for all those clingy jersey dresses? Gap / M&S - a bit dull and unexciting.

I can't help thinking there must be something better out there.. but what? I'm so out of touch - what are your recommendations??

MANY THANKS !!
Sunny xxxxx

I buy a lot from shopbop. Huge choice and really good no quibble, speedy refund service.

hi there

thanks!

some good ideas here - I'll look at the blogs and shopbop seems good too.

I do feel that the normal high street chains do seem a bit tatty now - I'm not sure if they've always been like that or if my tastes have changed :-)

any more ideas for shopping would be most welcome - smart not frumpy and nearly 40 yrs old

thank you!

My personal favourite is www.my-wardrobe.com. Once you've bought a few things there they do a wonderful service where they courier stuff to you for you to try on and you send it back by courier the following day. They only charge for what you keep so you don't have to wait for a refund. They also give me 20% off once each season. I barely buy anything from anywhere else now.

I absolutely love Yoox. It is a discount online Italian retailer, with beautiful designer clothes at great prices. It does take time and you need to be quite specific on what you want to narrow your searches down. Once you find a few designers that work for you, you can start narrowing it down and it becomes easier. Anything you order and don't want, you just put back into the box provided and send back. You receive either a credit to your account or a refund. Good luck!

I love Hush!
I've just gone back to work from maternity leave to a new job & found their stuff fits well & strikes the right balance between being fashionable (so I don't feel too old with all the youngsters! Am 37!) but without feeling I'm dressing too young!
Whistles also back to its best this season I think.

There are some excellent suggestions already posted - I have to agree Whistles are great for contemporary work wear. Just wanted to add that you might also want to try & Other Stories, http://www.stories.com/ They have some fab shoes and accessories. Banana Republic also have some good quality basics.

Looking at blogs is a great idea as sometimes it is not so much the individual items but how you put them together that can make the difference - colour/print combinations, shoes and accessories are key. I would suggest pulling together some images from magazines, websites and lookbooks, as it really does help to have a picture in mind. Just focus on a few key outfits, as trying to get a whole new wardrobe can be a bit overwhelming. Invest as much as you can in basic items, such as, black trousers, shoes, jacket/raincoat and handbag as these don't need to be changed every season.

Hope that helps.

I've got a couple of good dresses from Me & Em - their sales are worth looking out for.

Pure Collection and Poetry are worth a look (Poetry probably a bit casual for work).

I agree with Hush - I've never bought anything from there but lusted after a few things.

Not specifically online but try LK Bennett, White Company (eg for jersey dresses) and Massimo Dutti.

Oh and Hobbs has a great online site - it has loads and loads of items in its "clearance" section so you can get bargains if you happen to be the right size and don't mind that it's last season!

And if any of you would like to get up to 20% of what you spend on-line back off your mobile, broadband or energy bills, just ask me how - or look here to see how it works https://www.utilitywarehouse.co.uk/cashback/intro
