Christmas Staycation Ideas Please

Postby family1 » Sat Jun 07, 2014 1:57 pm

Yes I am actually thinking about Christmas!!
We are looking to go away for Christmas in the UK. We are looking for a cottage, hotel or a self catering cottage within a hotel and of course all child-friendly.
Has anyone done this and could recommend somewhere?
Many thanks

What about The Grove hotel in Hertfordshire? We haven't stayed at Christmas yet but I imagine it would be beautiful and we probably will at some point. We stayed for 4 nights over Easter with our three little ones and it really was fab.

Enjoy whatever you decide to do

How about Lower Mill Estate in the Cotswolds? I have a vested interest as we have a holiday house there, but we have had some great Christmases there. There is an on site Spa so you and the kids can go swimming, lots of nice walks (and beautiful on the off chance it snows!) and lots to do in the local area (www.waterpark.org for more info about the local area. Just 2hrs from SW London.
Our house is www.falcon-house.com if you want to have a look, but you will find a good selection of properties available to rent through agents as well.

We regularly go away to the countyside not far from London for the New Year and have tried two places which I reviewed on my blog : Mead Cottage (near a hotel so you can order room service) and Court Farm. Both had been nicely decorated for Christmas so it felt very homely.

More details here:

and here:

You are right to think about it now because these places often get booked early for Christmas/the New year.

We went to the Grove over new year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I know they do similar Christmas packages. It's just far enough out of London to feel like you're truly in the countryside and they have lots of dedicated kids activities (in addition to their normal ones) over the Christmas and new year period.

Thank you all so much for your responses.
Court Farm looked perfect but sadly it is already booked. Mead Cottage is too small.
I have emailed the Grove and will have a look at Lower Mill Estate
Thanks again

Two suggestions for you, neither of which we have admittedly been to at Christmas, but I think both would work at any time of year. We love Serenity House which is located in a small village in Dorset and sleeps 6 http://www.dorsetcoastalcottages.com/co ... tails/466/.
Alternatively we are very happy repeat visitors to Gitcombe House in Devon. Further to drive but well worth the journey:

Crieff Hydro hotel in Scotland is incredible, our family have been going for 50 years. They have self-catering cottages and lodges as well as hotel rooms. They have loads of activities for children as well as childcare options if you want some "me time"! It's a bit of a schlep to drive all the way but easily accessible from Edinburgh. Highly recommended for any time of year!
