Can anybody recommend a Hog Roast Company?

Postby Muddlemoo » Fri Jun 20, 2014 1:06 pm

Hi All

Can anybody please recommend a hog roast company for approx 50 people in SW London?

It's for our class summer party so has to be fairly reasonable.

Thanks very much.

Hi Muddlemoo

I was reading a piece The Telegraph the other day (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink ... n-hog.html) and I've cut this from the blurb as apparently they also cater to private parties:

Clements's http://www.roasthog.com, which serves various London markets, distinguished itself from the herd by providing good, springy ciabatta rolls, home–made apple sauce and rocket, but most of all by marinating the pig in a delicious blend of Mediterranean herbs with lemon, garlic and olive oil.
My original plan was to cook the beast myself, but hiring the machine alone – many companies will supply – would have cost £500, including battery, gas cylinders and other essentials. On top of that there was the pig to buy, costing some £200, and the buns, rocket and other ingredients to source. Allowing Clements to take charge of the cooking and serving only cost an extra £100.

I can't vouch for them myself but I'm assuming that The Telegraph should be good enough credentials to trust.

Hope you have a great time and if you want any other services like salads and other foodie delights or perhaps some vegetarian options, we'd be happy to help out.

All the best.

Try the Hogman of Haslemere (aka Shane). He's a friend of mine and we have sampled his food many times. He's a lovely guy and very professional. Definitely worth contacting!

Hi - I realise this is absolutely none of my business but I just wanted to say that some vegetarians (OK, me) find hog roasts a bit upsetting. Just seeing a whole dead animal turning on a spit. Imagine if it were a dog. You might want to check with any veggie parents that they don't mind.

I would also point out that, apart from the vegetarians, hog roast is not exactly a favourite with Jewish or Muslim children.

Hardly a surprise that this is Honeywell School.

Personally a hog roast is yum and yes someone's sensibilities will always find something disturbing at a school fair be it BBQ/ hog roasts for veggies or kosher/ halal/ non beef eaters, a cake and sweet stall for diabetics or allergies to wheat and food colouring but it's a school fete not a wedding. It's a few hours for kids and parents to let of steam, enjoy the sun and people don't have to eat if they don't agree with the food options - they could bring a picnic.
A hog roast is an easy way to feed lots of people a hot meal without taking up too much room. Surely the point of living in an inclusive society is realising that the whole world doesn't revolve around me and my specific needs?
Full disclosure - I don't eat beef and my mum was a vegetarian diabetic and neither of us ever let the food options get in the way of a good party.

I take your point Mrs C M - and I perfectly agree with you that those of us with non-mainstream diets shouldn't be pandered to. I'm just saying that seeing a whole dead pig can be a bit off-putting for some people. My daughter is very squeamish (even though she eats meat) and I know she'd hate it. There was a picture of some roasted dogs in China in the news the other day - and while I know we keep dogs as pets and not pigs, there isn't a huge amount of difference between the two. The one and only time I went to a party that had a hog roast I felt very uncomfortable going anywhere near it. I don't feel like that when I see someone eating a steak, and I cook sausages for my kids. It's not a moral thing - but a whole dead pig is just a bit revolting to some of us. It's just something to be aware of.

Oh, and the OP said it was for a class party, so I don't know how this turned into a discussion about Honeywell fete?!

Everyone's got something to be squeamish about, I actually got quite squeamish about the amount of human bare flesh roasting on the common this afternoon - what happened to sun screen folks?

A couple of hog roast company recommendations:

www.bigroast.com - offer hog roasts, veggie options, salads, deserts too.

www.thelondonhogroastcompany.co.uk - run by a South African guy who also offers all of the various options too.
