Smeg appliances......any good?

Postby Sash » Sun Jul 27, 2014 10:29 pm

We are about to order a new kitchen with two Smeg built in ovens, Smeg microwave and Smeg gas hob. I was all set to go when we were told by an I dependant retailer to avoid Smeg! We have been trying to find a decent quantity of product review to no avail. Please does anyone have any knowledge of these? Classic or Linea range preferably? We really need to order the kitchen ASAP and will repent on appliances.

in two words no. avoid.
smeg are big on design but very little else, i.e quality of components, when they go wrong and they do often. the parts are A) expensive.
B) take forever to get,
and if you are getting them repaired under warranty you could wait a week to get an appointment. after which you may wait a month for them to get a part. they'll look nice but wont last nice.
anything engineered has to be German. bosch, neff siemens.they are manufactured by bosch siemens group, bosch are the lower end and prices go up as you progress thru the group. neff are middle, siemens the top end. and gagganau are the very top end all made by bosch group. AEG are not german any more they are italian/swedish . miele german.
if you look around on the net you can get a single 60cm miele oven for £700. but it depends on the features you want. hope this helps.

The "Badge Engineering" that goes on in the Bosch Siemans Group is a tad confusing.

We went for Siemans appliances ( with a Neff hood since they seem to make better designs for these )

Over the five years we have owned them the cooker, microwave/cooker, hob and hood (ie all of them! ) have had problems - all fixed under warranty.

If you had asked me before I bought them I wouldn't have expected such a catalogue of failures for what is,after all, an expensive German brand.

Having said that the customer service was very good - but the quality of engineers pretty mixed. Our glass combi microwave/oven door just shattered (it wasn't turned on so THAT came as a huge surprise !) one morning sending glass all over the floor - not what you want with toddlers running around. We had a total of seven visits from the B S Group engineers before it was fixed under warranty...

A lot of them didn't seem to know what they were doing ( one reassembled the door but left parts of it still on the work surface!) . Anothere put it back the wrong way round....

The saviour was a B S Group engineer who knew what he was doing - he was the last to call but fixed it straight away .

This pattern repeated itself when our hob went wonky - two visits from bumbling engineers then the same engineer as before came and fixed it.

All in all you would expect more from B S .... both in quality and the quality of service....I repeat the customer service people were very friendly and helpful though.

My parents owned a large network of appliance retail stores specialising in Miele, Bosch, Gaggenau,Smeg, Liebherr.... My mother wouldn't recommend Smeg to anyone. With all of the brands it was one customers had the most problems with. German appliances are by far the best with Bosch being entry level. She highly recommends Miele - who expect their products to last 20 years. They are excellent in engineering, design, performance and customer service (she has visited the factories of all the main European brands). She also loves gaggenau but it is a different design/look to Miele. In her kitchen (which is top of the range) she only has Miele as well as their laundry products. Even their entry level products are superior and as you go up the price range all that changes are the bells and whistles.
Hope that helps (and no I have no association with Miele and my parents sold up last year!)

Thanks Lanme - can't get any clearer than that!

Our Miele hoover is fantastic and has given years of service - I'll look out for Miele in future :D
