Shutter company recommendations

Postby gail0810 » Tue May 27, 2014 10:07 am

Hello

We're looing to get some shutters made for our front windows (living room and one bedroom - typical narrow victorian terrace). Can anyone advise what kind of price I might be looking at (ball park)? And reasonably priced companies.

Many thanks

We used Plantation Shutters and love the results. It was £800 for the living room (after some haggling). http://www.plantation-shutters.co.uk/

I did quite a lot of research to find companies with good reviews - these are meant to be good too, so perhaps worth getting quotes.

We used New England Shutter Co. We have typical BTC terrace and I believe it was around £8k for the entire house. Found them excellent and our shutters are fabulous, imho.

We used Capella shutters. Paul, the owner was fabulous throughout and I am absolutely thrilled with them. We had half shutters in front bay window and full shutters in bedroom (one bay and one window) think it was about £1900 including delivery and fitting. Possibly a tiny bit more expensive than some companies but great customer service and product.

Hi, I used a company that was absolutely brilliant called Eden house. This was years ago but the shutters are still there and have held up beautifully. They seem to have moved to Ascot now but worth a try, very professional and friendly. http://edenhouseascot.co.uk/

We got ours from Shaftesburys on Webbs Road, SW11 and are very happy with the results. It does take a few weeks them from when you order them, just something to bear in mind.

We went in the end with the Traditional Shutter Company, as they were middle of the road of all the quotes we got and I got a good feel when speaking with Ted (who runs the company). He was very professional and had the whole thing fitted with minimal intrusion. The New England Shutter Company just quoted us silly prices and tried to justify it by the fact that everybody on our road went with them. Well, we didn't and I'm glad I gave Ted the opportunity to prove their products are as good as the New England ones. Very happy to recommend Ted and the Traditional Shutter Company!

We also used the Traditional Shutter Company (although got our own carpenter to do the fitting as our window is rather unusual!) Very happy with the shutters. This was about 2.5 years ago.

I found that there are actually two slightly different styles of shutter frame design. Most companies have the frame around the outside of the shutter panel. However the New England Company, and the Traditional Shutter Company, have a slightly different design, where the frame sits behind and the shutter panel sits on top, ie in front of the frame.

The advantage to the former (more common) design is that the whole thing sticks out less into the room. However the latter design (which I think is only offered by TNESC and Traditional Shutter Co) looks neater from the front - to my eye anyway - as there are fewer lines/frames visible. I preferred this.

Agree TNESC are silly prices. About 50% more than anyone else as I recall.

We also used Shaftesbury shutters for tier on tier shutters and are happy with the results. Our decision was purely financial, they were the cheapest of the lot we spoke to and I'd had them recommended by a friend so knew they were of a quality I would be happy with.

I can wholeheartedly reccommend TNESC for their service and aftercare too.

Recommend Hillarys. Do not use Plantation...the worst customer service I have experienced.

I have to disagree with “Spring Chicken”, my experience with Plantation Shutters (that is if we are talking about the same company) couldn’t have been easier from start to finish. Not only the staff on the phone were polite and helpful so were the guys who came over to measure and install my shutters. I would happily recommend them, in fact I already have!

We used Shutterly Fabulous (what is it with these companies with silly names) - same quality as New E shutter co (who we also got quotes from) but a lot cheaper. I negotiated on price (offering to put a sign in the window, offering to pay cash etc), and they were fairly flexible as we were having lots of work done and were clearly strapped for cash. In the end came in at less than half of the NESC quote. Still look and work great (4 years on). Good luck.

I used Shaftesbury Shutters for my house, very cheap but aftercare is awful. The sales office off northcote rd palm you off to a central number once the job is done. Recommend on price only.

Hillary's didn't do our shutters, but they did our blinds in three of our rooms. Terrible service. Cheap blinds. And terrible after sales service. Blinds that hung below the window recess. Cords so long they were dangerous. Avoid!
