Do you tip packers and movers?

Postby pieinthesky14 » Thu Aug 07, 2014 8:21 pm

Just checking - do you tip packers and movers? We are paying a royal sum to move two streets over... But that said... Thought I'd ask what others think?

Good question! We are having our house packed today and moving tomorrow and I was wondering about this. We've paid a lot to move but I doubt the guys get much of that. I don't have the answer but following to get others' opinions

We gave all the movers a four pack of cold beers in the end, which they were happy with....

There were 5.... Easy enough....

we did - mainly because it looked like such hard work and they didn't stop all day. I expect they were on minimum wage (or close to) and I wanted them to get some reward for their hard work.

We gave the 8 packers £20 each and 2 bottles of ice cold beer each when they had finished to go home with, plus cold drinks all day and gave them home made sandwiches & soup for lunch

We used Ward Thomasm they were great - my tip is not to try to move in all in one day - they can unload and unpack faster than you can make decisions as to where you want things put - and you end up saying - just put that there - we still had a room full of packed boxes for a year that we slowly unpacked as we had the energy....

If I was doing it again - move kitchen and basic stuff to live with for 2 weeks or so then another load then the final load a fortnight later adding cost to have them store things for a couple of weeks does add cost but much less stress..... I'd move, live out of suitcases - then get redecorated while you go on holiday and not effected by dust and smells - come back to freshly decorated house and move back in in stages....

Oh yes, if they work hard. Its the company that gets your money. It doesn't need to be much maybe ten pounds per half day. Chatting to mine I found what they really like is a bit of thought e.g. cups of tea and sandwiches or snacks. It also keeps them from popping out for food and gets your packing done faster. Good luck with the move.

The answer is 'yes please' as long as you are happy that the operatives have worked well and have been polite and friendly - but 'tipping' with alcohol is usually frowned upon by the bosses of reputable removal companies!
The operatives will, in any case, prefer cash to beer although they will be too polite to say so!!!
The amount of the tip could reflect the time that the job takes, any difficulties encountered and if you think that the crew 'went the extra mile' for you.
Removal workers, on the whole, work extremely hard - imagine yourself having to lift and carry large sofas/heavy beds/wardrobes/badly packed (so very heavy) boxes etc through tight doorways, up stairs etc every day, including Saturdays, the favourite day for clients.
In a good company, they are actually paid quite well, though probably not as much as you may be, depending upon your job!
The overheads of a removal company are actually quite large - I am speaking as the wife of a smaller removal company owner, and the mother of one of the operatives.
Tea/coffee/water should be on offer, especially if the job takes more than a couple of hours (snacks are an added bonus!) and the client should have done their homework (via the company) about how to pack boxes, what to take ahead (kettle, tea, milk etc!) and what to expect on the day.

On the subject of tipping, I think it is down to personal preference and how you feel the men performed on the day. If they did a great job, exceeding your expectations, and especially if they did anything not specifically contracted for, then I think you should tip.

We gave 20 pounds per head for the people who moved us. generally when you are moving (certainly the case for us) money is pretty tight, so it is understandable if you don't feel you can afford it on top of everything else. I imagine they would always prefer cash to payment in kind (e.g. a few beers) as they always have the option to buy themselves if you give them cash.

In terms of recommendations for a removal company, as mentioned on a similar thread a few months back, we were moved by Cavendish and Country - I would highly recommend them. They have since moved a few of our friends and all have reported positive experiences.

As with everything - if you really liked their service and you thought they went above their duty, then yes, a little tip is a good way of showing your gratitude.
That said, if they just did their job, don't give in to the American way and just tip for the sake of it. I find that increasingly everyone expects a tip whatever service they give and not everyone has spare 20s they just want to get rid of.

We did; £50 I think for a team of 3. They worked 7am - 9pm on the Thursday and then 7am - 5pm on the Friday so we really didn't think it was much to give them. We also left tea, coffee, orange squash, biscuits etc in the kitchen for them to help themselves to in the old house and new house.

They get paid diddly squat individually, even if the company charges a lot.
