Damp person recommendations

Postby GarethDavies » Sun Sep 28, 2014 11:32 am

We have rising damp in our lounge and also a water leak at the top of the house. We've had quotes that range so much and would rather get someone by personal recommendation who is reasonable. The big firms seem to charge thousands and doing research I'm not sure they are all worth it! So any advice/recommendations would be fab!

I would use Damp & Timberguard on the bridge on Nightingale Lane over the railway by Wandsworth Common Station. Christian there is very good, nice guy, has solved problems others gave up on.

I used to be an estate agent as always recommended Advance Damp and Timber. They charge around one hundred quid for the survey which, I think, is redeemable against works.
Most importantly, they don't find damp everywhere, all the time like the other large companies seem to.
They quite often advised my clients that the problem was lack of ventilation and condensation where other companies would probably have undertaken unnecessary and costly dampwork.
As well as recommending them for over a decade professionally, we have also used them personally two or three times (in different properties, I hasten to add!).

I really feel for you as we have been having the very same issues in our house and are only just seeing the end of the tunnel. We had a leak detection company come round, and then had an independent damp survey done. Whilst both were very useful, with hindsight I would say we should have done the damp survey first.

For the damp survey, we had Ray Baker from Academy Remedial come round and he was great. A lovely, very experienced guy who gives you a very thorough report including both the issues and the remedial work to be undertaken. I think it is quite important to have an independent damp survey done as they have no interest in telling you to do costly work that doesn't need to be done (e.g. damp proofing).

For leak detection, we had ADI come round. They were very thorough and again came up with a full report (for us it ruled out some issues we were concerned about, which was very useful). Depending on your issue, your home insurance company may cover the costs of tracing the leak so it's worth checking your policy and also use a leak detection company which is insurance approved (ADI is but there are others).

I hope this helps.
