Meningitis B vaccine - anyone inoculated their young babies

Postby mumandmore » Wed Oct 01, 2014 9:26 pm

Hi there
I recently had my 3 year old innoculated with the Meningitis B Bexero vaccine and am now considering inoculating my 2 month old (the GP says you can innoculate from 2 months onwards). Whilst I am sure this is fine I am just a little nervous of inoculating her at 2 months with a relatively new vaccine. Has anyone else had their young babies inoculated with this new vaccine?

My four month old had the jab last month and was absolutely fine afterwards. The vaccine would not have been licensed for use from 2 months onwards unless it was safe to use on that age group and the peak danger zone for men b is at 5 months so I personally think it is worth getting them done as early as possible.

Yes my son has had two men b jabs and was absolutely fine. The Dr's highly recommend it.

HI where has everyone done this? My gp doesn't offer these as my children aren't in the right age bracket for the NHS programme. Many thanks

Hi, my friends and I had to get it done privately as the NHS could not say when it would be introduced.

Very sad you are even contemplating this.. I guess you have all done your research into what is in this and the long term effects etc etc. and not just relied on information given to you by a doctor who gets paid lots of money to advocate it!.. shame

Hi Jenniferkim - are you referring to this vaccine specifically or vaccines in general?

Can you get this vaccine at Thurleigh Rd practice even if you are not registered there? If not does anyone have any recommendations of private clinics where you can?

PS for anyone wondering about the benefits, risks, etc, I thought this was a useful summary: http://www.meningitis.org/menb-vaccine

Both my children were vaccinated at the Wimbledon park travel clinic. It cost £75 per dose. They will need 2 (possibly 3 for my youngest who was only 6 months when he had the first dose). Neither had any side effects. I would recommend the clinic, would happily use them again. When I ask thurleigh rd practice about the vaccine they said they couldn't provide it privately but this might have changed.

Thurleigh road clinic was highly recommended by the health visitor for this. You don't have to be registered there. They buy the vaccine in for you when you book the appointment.

Hi. My 3-year old got the first vaccination and had a fairly severe reaction to it - we ended up in A&E. We won't get the second, after discussing with her paediatrician. He's seen a non-insignificant number of reactions to the vaccine. I put up details of what happened on another string of messages on the topic on NVN - apologies but I don't have time to find it or rewrite the details at the moment, but I expect it's easy to find. Ping me an email if you'd like and I'll send my tel no and you can call me.
