Shutters & blackout options Post Reply

Hello all

I'm thinking of having shutters put in my bedroom & the babies room. How dark do they keep the room at night? Will I need a blackout blind for the baby?

If you use them with a thick curtain they let in very little light. I'm pretty fussy about dark rooms and find shutters with curtains perfect. However, shutters alone do let in a little light. I would personally get shutters in babies room and then get some cheap thick curtains and you should be fine.

We just had Hillarys install blackout blinds in our bedroom and while they block out most of the light, the room isnt completely black unless we put the curtains on top. I've been using MagicBlinds in our son's room with a cheap Ikea blackout on top and it works pretty well. (Of course those Magic Blinds are super ugly!)

My neighbor had shutters installed in her babies room and found that she still had to use black tape down the sides of the window to block out the light completely.

You can get shutters which have a built in blackout blind - it's like a concertina blind built inside the shutter frame. see http://www.lifestyleshutters.co.uk/adva ... -shutters/

Never tried them myself though, and I'm not sure whether the built in blind would solve the issue of light around the edges of the shutter, if the window/shutter does not sit in a recess.
