Petition - compulsory Paediatric First Aid!!! Post Reply

I am a nanny and I go to a paediatric first aid course every year. Normally should be repeted every 3 years, but for my peace of mind I do one each year. I can't really say that what I've learned really helped me, but I go mostly to see if anything new and better comes.

Absolutely agree and would love to sign the petition when it gets going. I find it pretty shocking honestly that Paediatric First Aid is not required for everyone working with children. I worked with children in a variety of settings in the US and first aid qualification was always required to be current. Let us know how you get on and where we can sign.

Totally agree. There is a petition already started by Millie's Trust, a charity started after their poor daughter choked at nursery and passed away. It has around 98.5k signatures so only needs another 1.5k to get debated in parliament. Not sure of the link but there is one to their petition on their website or Facebook page

On behalf of all ofsted registered childminders, it is a legal requirement for us to complete first aid training every three years. We complete a two day paediatric course, and then refresh every three years.

So we are well trained. Personally I think first aid training should be made available for all. Especially those working with children.

Anyone who is not Ofsted registered is not legally allowed to be called a childminder. I do not want to detract from the important message of this thread BUT as a childminder I feel it necessary like Helen to point out that if you leave your child with a childminder you should ask them to confirm their paediatric first aid is up-to-date as it is a condition of their Ofsted registration.
If anyone chooses to leave their child in the care of an unregistered childminder then they are already entering into an arrangement outside the law so they are leaving themselves open to whatever risks that could pose.
Also I do not know much about nurseries, but I would have thought that a good nursery would ensure that an adequate number of staff members is first aid trained to ensure sufficient cover for sickness/holidays etc. I think if you are leaving your child in a nursery this may be a question worth asking.

Legally, it is indeed only required to have 1 pediatric 1st-aider (a full 1st aider in schools) trained and the local borough will only fund one such place for each setting. There is currently no legal requirement that there should be a pediatric 1st-aider on duty at all times, which I find preposterous!

However! Any reputable Nursery or Playgroup will train/re-train all of their staff every 2.5 years, ensuring that the majority of their current staff (allowing for those who have left and new staff who are in-waiting, are qualified.
My 2 nurseries (Whitton Day Nursery & Twickenham Day Nursery) have between 50 - 90% of staff + trainees (out of a total of +/- 30 staff) trained in pediatric 1st aid at any time, which means that there is always enough qualified staff available to deal with any minor or serious accidents even during staff sickness and holiday periods.
We pay for this ourselves and all staff are required to attend the 2 day training, over a weekend, every (approx) 2.5 years.
