Child Psychiatrist

Postby Louisa » Mon Nov 17, 2014 5:59 pm

Does anyone know a child psychiatrist? My daughter suffers from strong fears and as soon as she is comforted on one, finds another. They are slightly more intense than usual fears of kids her age and I would like to make an appointment to see someone in South London who can help us both deal with this.
Many thanks,
Louisa

You might want to contact the Anna Freud Centre - they are the absolute front-runners in this area. Although they are in North London they should be able to give you some guidance on finding a therapist for your daughter,

Best of luck

Hiya
You might want to give these guys a go (Wandsworth): http://www.childrenstherapies.co.uk/
A qualified Pychotherapist or children's Counsellor should be fine for those issues (you don't necessarily need a Psychiatrist). There are a number of directories you can try but www.itsgoodtotalk.org.uk is quite good (just check they work with kids).
Talk to your GP as they may be able to make referrals/recommendations too.
Finally, this is a really nice article on how to support an anxious child: http://blogs.psychcentral.com/stress-be ... hould-try/
Definitely worth a read if you are struggling with how to deal with this.
Best of luck!

Hello,

Psychiatrists prescribe medication, amongst other things, but it sounds like a therapist/psychologist you might be better with.

I would recommend going to your GP. Wandsworth has a new Access Clinic so all referrals are offered appointments with minimal delay for an assessment and are then directed to the appropriate service.

Good luck.

Thank you all. Yes, our GP said that her symptoms are too mild to get an NHS referral but that I could look someone up & take her privately. She suggested a psychiatrist to evaluate and then send her to a psychotherapist. Seems long-winded to me...

You can self-refer to Access. Just call them 02035136631. They have many options available for a service not just NHS camhs is she doesn't meet the threshold.
