What is ParkRun?

Postby tamara » Tue Jan 27, 2015 1:06 pm

hi
I've seen a ton of annoucements about ParkRun coming to Wandsworth.

What is it?

Sounds like a run in the park (duh!) but all the excitement looks like there may be more to it.

Thanks

Parkrun is a free weekly run in various locations on Saturdays at 09:00

There are quite a few in London and there has been talk of it coming to Wandsworth for some time now, however...I believe the sticking point is Wandsworth want(ed) £££ for this to take part in their borough and this would go against Parkrun's ethos.

Are the announcements you've seen recent? Just it seems to have gone quiet these last couple of months.

It is a free 5k race, every weekend. They take part at various locations around the country and are organised by volunteers to be a friendly and fun way for people to run. You get serious runners and you get mums with buggies, and everyone gets cheered on the way around.

Despite it being free to enter and run by volunteers, up until now, Wandsworth were insisting they paid like a commercial race to use the parks.

Thankfully they've finally seen the light and have approved a 12 month trial for Parkrun to use Tooting common

Oooh I'm excited to hear this - in the past I've tried the Dulwich one. Its just that little bit too far on a Saturday morning for a 5k run. The other option is Wimbledon Common - also too far. Lets hope the Tooting one is a success - I will be giving it a go!

This is great news. They also do Junior ParkRun for kids (a 2K race) which we currently have to go to Brockwell Park for. Think it will be really popular. If anyone is interested, their website is: http://www.parkrun.org.uk/
You just register once then you can take part in any run whenever you want.
