How to get pregnant?

Postby confusedbuthopeful » Tue Feb 03, 2015 3:43 pm

I am a regular user posting under another name...

... wondering if any of you mummy's out there could give me your tips on how to get pregnant? I have been reading the conception bit on Mumsnet but don't understand all the abbreviations/slang they use and they all seem to be taking their temperature every 2 seconds...

I am very new to this. I have an app which I am using to keep track of my cycle, and hubby & I are doing what needs to be done (!) around the ovulation date. I don't really want to buy the ovulation tests because they're really expensive, but will do if they come recommended.

Also, how long does it take providing everything is ok fertility-wise? Months? Years? When to see a GP if nothing happens?

Thanks for your help.

Just do the deed every day or at the very least every other day (cycles are not as regimented as they would have you believe). I guarantee you will be pregnant by month 3 of trying x

Hi Confused but helpful.
I know I am not meant to post links to other websites but I hope that Annabel will not mind me helping you. This can be such an anxious time and if you can try and remain as relaxed as possible, it really can help.
We run a website called The Doctor and Daughter's Guide to Pregnancy- and if you find our site and search for "How to get Pregnant" in the search box, you should find a fully comprehensive article on what you should be doing and what you shouldn't be doing. We hope it happens for you very soon - and let us know if you have any questions.
Good Luck!
p.s.
i know a few of the abbreviations on those websites
TTC Trying to Conceive
TWW Two Week Wait
BFP Big Fat Positive
AF Aunt Flow- Period
OH- Other Half
Hope that helps!

Give up...

Worked for me, twice! Both times after about a year of nookie.

Good luck.

I found Zita West's book "How to get Pregnant" really helpful. Good luck.

Hi,

I borrowed an ovulation kit and was pregnant in three months so I can really recommend it. Sometimes it's useful so you a) know that you are ovulating and b) when that is. Sometimes ovulation can be irregular so it's useful to know especially if you are unable to do the deed regularly! the only downside I would say is that it did take the romance out a little bit but the plus side is getting pregnant quickly!!

Best of luck x x

You can get ovulation sticks online for not very much. I used these (I had a feeling when I was ovulating and these confirmed it for me). Worked for me every time. Good luck!

timing is really important, I used cheap ovulation sticks from Amazon to tell me when to focus our efforts. You are most fertile for a few days before you ovulate and then one or two days after, so don't wait till you get a positive ovulation result to start DTD (doing the deed). If you don't want to use the ovulation tests then every other day is the safest approach.

6 month of trying is the average I believe (plus or minus a month or two depending on your age) so don't panic if nothing happens for a few months. Apparently 80% get pregnant within a year.

Howver if there is an underlying fertility issue then the best timing in the world won't get you pregnant. GPs will run tests after 6 months of trying if you are over 35 (I think) or 12 months of trying if you are under 35. They run tests to see if you are ovulating and test various hormone levels. They should also check your thyroid. Oh and your partner should have a sperm check too at that stage. The next steps depend on the results: eg if you are not ovulating you could have Clomid which is a drug that encourages ovulation, if you have thyroid issues that will be medicated, you may be referred for a scan to have your tubes checked, etc.

Note that the ovulation kits and sticks do not show you are definitely ovulating even if you get a positive. They test for the hormone which surges just before you ovulate, but it is possible to have the hormone surge and still not actually be ovulating. You need the GP tests to be sure.

Keep going and remember to enjoy trying. Having children is a journey an the conceiving is just part of it (one of the fun parts!).

I have a new packet of clear blue ovulation sticks which go off in Marh 2016 and I'm definitely not using them before then(!). Let me know if you want them, free to a good home!

First you need a... potential mummy and a potential daddy, and then you just need to... practise... a lot, but mostly at about the right time of the month. Probably best to work it on a shift basis, you know, two weeks on, two weeks off.

Make sure you are taking folic acid
This is to make sure your body has everything it needs to enable conception.
Er, I think folic acid is not an aid to conception. It is an aid to preventing certain abnormalities that occur during pregnancy, for example spina bifida.
