Loft Conversion Companies - any great experiences in last 6m

Postby sixfootredhead » Wed Jan 28, 2015 3:48 pm

Hi all,

I am sure this question has been asked many times (and I have read historical threads on this forum) but is anyone able to give positive feedback on a loft company they have used for a project in the last 6 months?

We are thinking of doing our extension within the next 6-12 months so are researching our options now and are inviting a few companies over to quote. So far I have had Landmark out and am thinking of inviting HUrlingham Estates over. Having not done this before I have no yardstick but the chap seemed professional and realistic about disruption, timeline and cost. However, I have obviously seen the negative feedback on here about Landmark so it would be good to have feedback on other companies that have done a good (or great!) job in the past 6 months.

Many thanks.

Hi,

We recently used Landmark. The upfront service we had was good (architect, planning) and the project started on time. We had a great build team who worked very hard and delivered as they promised, however, Landmark were pretty much non-existent for the actual build stage. The 'project manager' was a glorified fee collector and it was our builder who led the project. We were lucky as he did a great job, but I know others where this has not been the case.

I am happy to share our builders name by PM if you would like, but I would be careful about going ahead with Landmark on this basis.

Locally (SW18), I have noticed a few lofts being done by SMA Lofts. No direct experience, but they have done about 3 on a local street in the past 6mths, and the projects seems to progress quickly. Might be worth contacting them

Good luck!

Re- Affleck- do not touch them!! They promise everything and then slow down to snails pace and drag the completion- nice workmen but administration /management is terrible- they just don't care!! And forget about project management!! Never again...

We've just used More Space and have been pleased. Like other companies More Space are the agent/project manager and a contractor did the work. The work has been done well, the builders were polite and very unobtrusive. They always cleaned up after themselves. We didn't see much of the More Space project manager but he was always available by phone or email if needed. The contractor was very contactable as well. Overall we've been very pleased, I imagined the worst (delays, dirt everywhere, overrunning the budget) but it's been plain sailing.

Thanks Nev123. Have had a couple of other reccos for More Space and they are coming out to quote next week.

Hi sixfootreadhead,

With regards to your loft conversion you are looking to undertake in 6-12 months time the main thing you need to be cautious of with some of the 'all in one' loft companies can be the sacrifice of quality and design.

We are an architectural practice based on Old York Road in Wandsworth. We offer a full architectural design service and would take you through the whole process to achieve planning, building regulations and can see the whole project through to completion, if required.

We can also assist with organising the building works as we work with a number of trusted contractors; this allows us to obtain a competitive price for you.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Kind Regards
Jamie

We had a great experience last year using Premier Lofts. They don't advertise as they don't need to and the owner (Malcolm) is directly involved in every project. I think the key is that they haven't become too big. I was probably a nightmare client as I was pregnant with no 3 and hugely stressed. The loft was done very quickly, on time and on budget. Having had a nightmare experience when doing our side return with a well known local firm, this was a breeze. The only 'downside' is that I think they tend to do fairly standard lofts so if you are looking for something particularly unique then I'd go the architect route. If, however, you have a standard nappy valley terrace and want a fairly typical loft with an accountable builder who actually seems to care about his reputation then they are great for that.
