Holiday in Caribbean destination

Postby Bambino » Tue Feb 17, 2015 10:48 pm

Hello,
We are looking for a last minute (sort of, in March) holiday in Caribbean with our one year old but we don't know where to start with. I'd appreciate recommendations if anyone has got experience in a good resort or knows any good travel agency who doesn't do mass tourism but arranges more bespoke holidays.
Many thanks.

For agencies, try Babyfriendlyboltholes or Tots Too.

For a specific resort, a friend went to Windjammer in St Lucia with an 18 month old and highly recommended it.

For good travel agency - we found Turquoise Holidays quite good and knowledgeable, they recommended a lovely place to us (not in the Caribbean but i know they do lots of Caribbean destinations)

We stayed at the Windjammer last year in St Lucia (kids were 3.5 and 16months at the time) and we really enjoyed it. Beach is lovely, staff are lovely, all their apartments and suites have kitchen facilities so great with small children, they even have an ice cream beach hut! It is on a hillside so make sure you get a suite or apartment lower down (they gave us one automatically without request so shouldn’t be a problem)
Worth noting about St Lucia is there is quite a lengthy and very hilly drive (1.5hrs to windjammer) to where a lot of the nice resorts are located. We were recommended to pay the extra and take a helicopter (15minute flight) it was definitely worth it after the 8.5 hour flight.
Also stayed at Colony club in Barbados when my eldest was 8months old and it was also great. They put us in a Junior suite which was right next to the pool so we could literally put her to bed and sun bake while she was asleep, also great with kids. I would say the least favourable beach but the pool well and truly makes up for it.
Last place was blue waters in Antigua. We also loved this resort but I would say it is probably the least accommodating for kids with what they have to offer. However we went when I was pregnant with my 2nd and my eldest was around 18months and they were really great and even allowed us to eat at the adult only restaurant (we had a 6.30 table) So we would happily go back there with kids. Also they placed us nice and close to everything so again could use a baby monitor and sunbake while we had a sleeping toddler.
Other things worth noting - Most kids clubs require your child to be 4 years, there are some that offer from 2 years but generally not under.
All the places above offer babysitting, we haven’t ever use it but I am sure they would be fine.
Eating out generally in the Caribbean is expensive...circUS$50 upwards just for a main, also you will generally need a hire car if you are planning to eat out as taxis are also expensive. We found going for the all-inclusive or full board option easier as we have quite lazy holidays in the Caribbean so tend to spend most of the time by the resort pool or beach and takes the hassle out of the evenings. Hope you have a lovely time!

I second Turquoise holidays. Brilliant service and great price. If you get Yasmin, even better

Blue waters antigua is lovely - nothing too much for them and the love kids, although better for younger ones as not that much to do. Most of the kids were a year or under and there weren't many (but we felt welcome)

Coconut bay is great - 10 mins from airport (you don't really hear any aircraft noise though) and from what I remember, a free kids club from 6 months plus. More of a creche but my little one went for an hour or so a day. Also great kids facilities. Maybe not as up market as some hotels but relaxed, aimed at families and we were really happy.

Heard good things about Carlise bay and st james' club - but I think the kids clubs might be for older children. Although in most resorts you can hire a nanny for $10 per hour and they take the kids to kids club

St Lucia generally - road from airport is terrible. Kids got sick. Wish we'd known about the helicopter option when we booked.

For toddler-friendly hotels in the Caribbean, have a look here:

For childcare for a 1 year old, you could try Blue Waters in Antigua

Or check out Cotton Bay Village in St Lucia

All are seriously good for adults as well!
