@ rugby - ideally nowhere would be disrupted by works. But if somewhere has to be a, a small corner of the common just isn't that bad. Sure you'd have to re-locate some kids' sports matches about...maybe across the common...or to Clapham Common...or Tooting Common...or Battersea Park....not ideal of course, but not the end of the world.

@mungomuffit - ideally not on the common I agree...but perhaps there is no other viable option in such an urban area? It has to go through Wandsworth to reach Clapham Junction and you need the air vents somewhere. Alternative would be to knock down some people's houses, and build it there, but that's not idea either.

We just need to be careful not to let short term concerns stand in the way of projects which are needed to sustain London as an expanding and successful city.

You obviously know much more about this than we do.

Closing Trinity Fields for 10 years (and potentially for ever) is just fine by you. You have NO IDEA how many people this impacts or what a catastrophe this would be for Junior Sport

Just find the space elsewhere, we manage over 1,000 kids every Sunday morning on 9 disparate green spaces. Let me tell you space is at a premium across the whole of South London and we know every square inch of practical space that would work for us, it is ALL very busy.

Please get informed before making appallingly ill informed statements and disrupting sensible pro-active consultation exercises with wild accusations.

You're right it will be unfortunate to have to disrupt some kids' sport matches. But those are the same kids who will benefit from the new transport infrastructure when they commute in 20 years' time.

Obviously we should look at the all the options and pick the least bad one. Of course we should take time to find the least disruptive route, and it would be great if the shaft could go on a brown field site.

All I am saying is that in considering the options we must not get bogged down in short term considerations. We must be open minded and realistic about the options in a densely populated urban area. Better transport infrastructure is needed in London, and the fact is some sacrifices have to be made. Have a consultation of course, but a knee-jerk nimby attitude inciting people to "Save Wandsworth Common" endangers the future prosperity of our city.

(and although the Crossrail works around Tottenham Court Road are disruptive I know, I think that is partly because that is a major Crossrail station and interchange with the tube. All we are talking about on the common is an air vent, which I will involve significantly less works).

Wrecking 30 local sports organisations is a 'short term problem'

You have a VERY long term strategic view.

For Wandsworth sport - the loss of Trinity Fields would be pretty catastrophic.

NOT a 'short term problem'

And yes the permanent air vent is so big it would make Trinity Fields unusable - permanently.

Let's hear your realistic alternative suggestion then?

I will leave TFL to distill the comments and interventions which they have WELCOMED from this early stage consultation, not least those from our statutory authority SportEngland who we have asked to get involved.

No doubt they will let us know when they are ready for the next round and their strategic planners have investigated all the possible alternatives.

In the interim we will continue to deliver sporting opportunity to the community on the restricted grass we have available and get on with building a new all weather pitch in partnership with the community to maximise the availability.

What will you do!?

So you don't have an alternative suggestion then. You really need to think about one before your campaign can be taken seriously. Just saying "no" is over simplistic. Come up with a good alternative idea that works, and I would certainly support you.

What will I do? Continue to support the improvement of London's infrastructure and encourage people to think about the long term prosperity of London for the benefit of their children and future generations, even if that does mean some short term inconvenience. That's what I will do.

'my campaign'

I am merely one person - representing a sporting organisation with a few thousand members.

This is not 'my campaign'

I have no need to propose transport solutions for south London. You may choose to.

Please let us put our own point of view and stop making false presumptions and assumptions.

the height of nimbyism here and it's ridiculous when an alternative is not suggested. No one wants large building projects in their area and the construction traffic that comes with it but what can we do! London is a growing city and we have to accept that! Make proposals to how it can be better done not just say don't do it

VYMummy sounds awfully like Actuallyadad. Guess what she joined and posted twice in 15 minutes and never returned - poor effort actuallyadad aka VYMummy - try harder next time!

On this subject I am a SINGLE ISSUE objector - protecting sport - I guess that makes me a proud NIMBY protecting green space - - I don't see how that is bad.

I particularly don't see why it makes such beliefs subject to insult from anonymous people with unkown agendas,

mungomuffit wrote:Come on actuallyadad, you are being very unreasonable. It is not rugby's job and nor in his ability (no offence rugby ;) ) or any other individual or local group to deliver a new Crossrail proposal. That is TFL's job.

No one is denying that it won't be a great asset for our part of SW London.
What TFL need to do is undertake a survey of all alternate places for the shafts on brown field or other sites, like perhaps they could purchase some property in private ownership... I don't know as I don't have that level of information at my disposal unfortunately. TFL does, so let's hope they get on with the job as there must be an alternative to their first suggestion of putting them on the Common and Trinity Fields.

If anyone has a knee-jerk reaction then it is you actuallyadad, having apparently already decided that the Common and Trinity Fields are the perfect sites for the shafts and there are no alternatives. Even TFL hasn't decided that yet, so I don't know how you can be so sure.
No offence taken from you - getting quite hacked off with actuallyadad also known as VYMummy - yawn - the knee jerk

rugby: I've read the letter from Boris Johnson that you posted a link to. It says no more than the blindingly obvious (at least to most of us) and says nothing whatsoever about Trinity Fields or Wandsworth Common or any of the specifics of your objections. Can you at least be honest in what you say on this thread?
